Rome, Italy – A significant fire has affected the notable Bernaga Monastery in La Valletta Brianza, close to Milan, causing substantial damage and endangering invaluable artworks, as confirmed by authorities on Sunday. The fire erupted on Saturday, prompting the safe evacuation of 22 cloistered nuns, who fortunately suffered no injuries.
Established in 1628, the Bernaga Monastery is of profound historical and religious importance. It is where Carlo Acutis, the Catholic Church’s inaugural millennial saint, celebrated his First Communion—a significant sacrament in Catholicism. Acutis was canonized on September 7, 2025, by Pope Leo XIV.
As reported by the Italian fire service, the flames consumed large sections of the monastery. Dramatic night images released by firefighters displayed fierce flames engulfing parts of the building. Marco Panzeri, the mayor of La Valletta Brianza, characterized the event as “a disaster, an immense, incalculable damage.”
Although the nuns were safely evacuated, numerous historic artworks and sacred artifacts are feared lost. Local authorities are currently probing the fire's cause, which is suspected to be a short circuit, though this remains unverified.
The Bernaga Monastery, with its nearly 400 years of legacy, served as both a religious landmark and a cultural gem in northern Italy. The incident has deeply affected the local community and the worldwide Catholic faithful, who cherish the site for its ties to Saint Carlo Acutis.
The fire has initiated assessments by emergency and heritage preservation teams to evaluate the damage and recover what can be salvaged from this historic monastery. Officials stress the importance of maintaining the memory and heritage of this significant religious site.
