Emerging details shed light on the two alleged attackers involved in the tragic incident at Bondi Beach, Australia. A hotel staff member from Davao City recounted that the suspects primarily remained in their hotel room, avoiding social interactions and showing minimal interest in their environment during their visit last month.
The suspects, Sajid Akram, aged 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, are suspected of causing the deaths of 15 individuals during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach on December 14. This event has raised alarm bells regarding antisemitism and violent extremism in Australia.
While Sajid Akram was shot by police at the scene, Naveed Akram survived and was later placed in a coma. He now faces numerous charges, including those of murder and terrorism, with Australian officials indicating that the attack may have ties to the extremist group known as ISIS.
The father-son duo were reported to have traveled to the southern Philippines before the attack, selecting the GV Hotel in Davao City's lively downtown. An anonymous hotel employee described how the pair seldom left their room and when they did, it was usually for a short duration around 9 a.m. Unlike other guests who often engage in casual conversations, the Akram family kept to themselves.
According to the worker, interactions were minimal. Naveed Akram inquired about bottled water and the location to purchase durian, a popular local fruit, but otherwise barely communicated with the staff.
Hotel management confirmed that the suspects booked their stay via a third party, having altered their original arrival date to November 1 instead of mid-November. Their payments were consistently made in cash.
Notably, the two men had no visitors during their stay, nor did they have anyone else enter their room. When venturing out, Sajid Akram was seen carrying a backpack, while Naveed had a shoulder bag, though staff were uncertain of the contents.
Philippine authorities are scrutinizing the activities of the suspects during their Davao visit but have stated that there is no evidence suggesting any extremist training took place. National Security Adviser Eduardo Año commented that their limited excursions from the hotel make it improbable for them to have interacted with militant organizations.
Año also assured that the security landscape in southern Philippines has seen significant improvements since the 2017 Marawi siege, with only a handful of small militant factions remaining operational.
Local Muslim leaders have dismissed any links to the suspects. Abubacar Camid, head of a nearby mosque, noted that they immediately checked security footage upon hearing about the incident, asserting, "We did not see them here; we keep a close watch on unfamiliar faces."
Residents of Davao have expressed worries that the presence of the suspects may tarnish the city’s reputation, especially as many in Mindanao have labored to demonstrate that the area is peaceful. Recent graduate John Edward Mier voiced his dismay, saying, "Mindanao has been working hard to move forward and shed its troubled past."
The subdued presence of the suspects underscores the challenges in identifying potential threats prior to actual violence. Both Australian and Philippine investigators continue to exchange information to piece together the circumstances surrounding the Bondi Beach attack.
