The United Kingdom announced that its Royal Air Force jets recently engaged in a collaborative 12-hour patrol alongside U.S. and NATO forces close to the Russian border, in light of recent drone and aircraft intrusions into NATO airspace.
Defence Minister John Healey referred to the operation as a “significant joint endeavor” with allied nations. He emphasized that this mission not only provided critical intelligence to bolster the operational readiness of British forces but also conveyed a clear message of NATO solidarity to Russian President Vladimir Putin and other possible threats.
During the operation, an RC-135 Rivet Joint electronic surveillance plane and a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft flew from the Arctic region, transiting over Belarus and Ukraine. A U.S. Air Force KC-135 refueling aircraft also offered support in the air.
This patrol is a direct response to recent breaches into the airspace of NATO member states, including Poland, Romania, and Estonia. Such incidents have heightened concerns regarding Russia's escalating activities involving drones and military aircraft near allied borders.
This month, European Union leaders reached an agreement to bolster their defenses against Russian drones, underscoring the rising security anxieties in the region.
