South Africa pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks of the Women’s World Cup, defeating hosts India by three wickets in a thrilling contest. The dramatic victory came after a brilliant unbeaten 84 from Nadine de Klerk, who single-handedly changed the course of the match in the closing overs.
Chasing a target of 252, the Proteas were in deep trouble at 81 for 5, but de Klerk’s explosive batting turned the game around completely. Her innings not only saved South Africa from defeat but also left Indian fans in disbelief as the visitors chased down the target with seven balls to spare.
India’s Strong Start and Ghosh’s Heroics
Earlier in the day, India looked well-positioned to dominate the game after a fine batting display led by wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh. India had stumbled early, losing six wickets for just 102 runs, before Ghosh’s brilliant knock brought them back into contention.
Her aggressive 94 from 77 balls, including 11 boundaries and two sixes, helped India post a respectable 251 before being bowled out. Ghosh’s fearless batting was supported briefly by Pooja Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma, who added crucial runs lower down the order.
At that point, India looked confident, and their bowlers seemed ready to defend the total on a surface that offered some assistance to spin and seam alike.
Wolvaardt and Tryon Build the Foundation
South Africa’s innings started on a shaky note, losing key wickets early as India’s bowlers, led by Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma, applied pressure with disciplined lines. Captain Laura Wolvaardt held one end firmly, showing great patience and control to steady the innings.
Her 70 runs from 111 balls provided much-needed stability after the early collapse. Wolvaardt’s 61-run partnership with Chloe Tryon helped South Africa slowly rebuild and regain momentum. Tryon’s counterattack — a fluent 49 off 66 balls — began to turn the tide in South Africa’s favor before she was dismissed just short of her half-century.
Despite the setbacks, the Proteas showed great character and composure to stay in the chase.
Nadine de Klerk’s Game-Changing Knock
When de Klerk walked to the crease, South Africa still needed more than 100 runs with limited wickets in hand. What followed was a display of fearless hitting and determination. De Klerk took on India’s bowlers with power and precision, scoring an unbeaten 84 off just 54 balls.
Her innings included five massive sixes and seven fours, with her last six sealing the match in dramatic fashion. The 69-run partnership between de Klerk and Tryon changed the entire momentum of the game, and once Tryon departed, de Klerk carried the team over the line with confidence.
Every boundary she struck deflated India’s hopes further, as the hosts watched the game slip away from their grasp.
India Left to Reflect on Missed Chances
For India, the loss will be hard to digest. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted after the game that her team missed key opportunities with both bat and ball. Dropped catches and poor execution in the final overs proved costly.
Despite Richa Ghosh’s heroics and a solid bowling start, India could not hold their nerve when it mattered most. Their bowlers struggled to contain de Klerk’s late assault, and their fielding lapses only made matters worse.
The defeat denied India the chance to top the World Cup points table, while South Africa’s victory brought them level with the hosts.
South Africa Gain Confidence and Momentum
This thrilling win has boosted South Africa’s confidence in the tournament. The team showed resilience, teamwork, and belief even when victory seemed out of reach. Nadine de Klerk’s match-winning performance will be remembered as one of the finest individual innings of the tournament.
Captain Laura Wolvaardt praised her team’s fighting spirit after the game, saying that belief and calm decision-making were key to their turnaround. “We just kept telling ourselves that if we bat till the end, we can win. Nadine’s innings was simply outstanding,” she said.
As the Women’s World Cup continues, both India and South Africa will look to learn from this intense contest — one for redemption and the other for momentum toward the knockout stages.
