South African stand-in captain Aiden Markram said Pakistan is within its rights to prepare extreme turning wickets for their two-Test series, which begins in Lahore on Sunday. Pakistan had employed a similar tactic last year against England, shaping the pitches to favor spin and secure a 2-1 series victory.
Previous Success Against England
Pakistan’s strategy involved using giant windbreaks, oversized fans, and patio heaters to accelerate pitch deterioration. This created a surface offering maximum turn and grip for spinners. Despite losing the first Test, Pakistan bounced back to beat England, with captain Ben Stokes calling the conditions “pretty extreme.”
Markram Welcomes The Challenge
Markram, leading South Africa in place of the injured Temba Bavuma, emphasized that facing spin-friendly tracks is part of the challenge. “We saw how things turned out in the English series. That was Pakistan’s way of trying to win, and it’s completely fair,” he said at a press conference. He expressed excitement about the opportunity to test his team under these conditions.
Preparation For Extreme Spin
South Africa has worked hard to prepare for the series. The team created spin-friendly wickets during a training camp before departing for Pakistan. “Most of our focus has been on the challenges Pakistan poses in terms of spin-friendly tracks. As a team not regularly exposed to those conditions, it’s exciting for us,” Markram added.
Absence Of Key Players
South Africa faces additional challenges with Temba Bavuma sidelined due to injury. The team will also miss its lead spinner Keshav Maharaj, recovering from a groin strain. Markram acknowledged Maharaj’s importance, saying, “We’ll miss Kesh heaps. He’s incredible, even when the ball doesn’t spin.”
Opportunities For New Spinners
The absence of Maharaj opens the door for other spinners to step up. Players like Senuran Muthusamy and Simon Harmer, who last played a Test two years ago, are expected to feature. Markram sees this as a chance for the team to explore options and strengthen their spin attack ahead of the series.
Focus On Five Days Of Cricket
Markram stressed that the team’s preparation is centered on putting together five days of strong cricket in challenging conditions. “We’re trying to put a lot of focus there and ultimately deliver a solid performance for the first Test,” he said. The South African squad is motivated to adapt quickly and perform well despite the spin-friendly pitches.
