ChatGPT is entering the payments sector in India, allowing users to order groceries, pay bills, or transfer money directly within a chat. This service is powered through the UPI platform, in partnership with India’s National Payments Corporation (NPCI) and payment gateway Razorpay. The pilot program aims to simplify transactions while keeping user control and security intact.
Seamless Transactions Through Chat
The system lets users interact naturally with ChatGPT to complete payments. For example, typing “Buy my usual BigBasket order” would prompt the AI to display your cart, confirm totals, and process the payment directly. Every transaction requires explicit user approval, ensuring safety. Razorpay manages the merchant integration while NPCI provides UPI’s secure infrastructure.
BigBasket Joins Early Pilot
BigBasket is among the first partners to test ChatGPT’s payment capabilities. Users can browse previous orders, select items, and make payments without leaving the chat. The process still triggers standard UPI authentication, ensuring that security standards are maintained. This demonstrates how conversational AI can handle practical shopping tasks in everyday life.
Fintech Synergy with UPI
India’s fintech ecosystem, where UPI already handles billions of transactions monthly, provides a strong foundation for ChatGPT’s payments system. By integrating AI with UPI, payments become faster and smoother. ChatGPT could also offer smarter suggestions for purchases based on past orders, making the system more personalized for users.
Pilot Scope and Expansion Plans
Currently, the pilot is limited to small-ticket transactions, focusing on groceries and daily essentials. If successful, the service may expand to include utility payments, travel bookings, and other digital transactions. India could become the first country to allow AI agents to conduct transactions directly on a public payment network.
Future Impact on Indian Users
This rollout has the potential to change how Indians interact with money online. ChatGPT could evolve from a virtual assistant into a full-fledged commerce tool, enabling faster, convenient, and safer payments. The initiative demonstrates how AI and fintech can combine to enhance everyday financial experiences for millions of users.
With NPCI and Razorpay backing, ChatGPT’s pilot project highlights the growing intersection of AI and financial technology. By integrating UPI into conversational AI, the service sets a precedent for seamless, secure, and user-friendly digital payments across India.
