England batter Harry Brook has urged his team not to underestimate Australia in the upcoming Ashes series. Speaking ahead of the series opener in Perth, Brook emphasized that even though doubts linger over Australia captain and fast bowler Pat Cummins’ fitness, England must remain cautious. Australia has a strong bowling lineup capable of challenging any opposition.
Cummins’ Fitness in Doubt
Australia coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that Cummins is running out of time to be fit for the first Test. While the 32-year-old fast bowler has not been officially ruled out, McDonald noted that Cummins would need to be bowling regularly at least four weeks prior to the opener to avoid setbacks. Losing Cummins, a key figure in Australia’s Ashes success since 2017-18, would be a significant blow for the hosts.
Brook Acknowledges Australia’s Strength
Brook praised Cummins as “an amazing bowler” with high pace and skill. He added that even if Cummins misses the first Test, Australia has plenty of capable fast bowlers ready to step in. “When their tails are up, they can plough through teams,” Brook said, highlighting that England cannot take any Australian players lightly, regardless of fitness concerns.
England Team Leadership and Stokes’ Role
As England’s vice-captain, Brook expressed confidence that skipper Ben Stokes will participate in all five Tests, despite recovering from a shoulder injury. Brook noted Stokes’ resilience and determination, saying, “If you do have a little niggle, just power through – and that is what he does so well.” His presence and leadership are expected to be crucial for England’s Ashes campaign.
Ashes Schedule and Key Matches
The 2025-26 Ashes series will begin on November 21 in Perth. The second Test will be a day-night match in Brisbane, followed by the third Test in Adelaide. The series concludes with the traditional matches in Melbourne and Sydney in December and January. England aims to challenge Australia’s dominance, while Australian selectors hope for a fully fit squad, including Cummins.
Preparing for a Competitive Series
Brook’s comments underline the competitive nature of the Ashes series. England recognizes the threat posed by Australia’s pace attack and experienced lineup, even with possible absences. The team’s focus on discipline, resilience, and preparation will be key in countering Australia’s strengths. Both teams are expected to field strong sides, making the series a closely contested battle for cricketing supremacy.
