The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have added a familiar name to their lineup by signing Jason Pierre-Paul to the team’s practice squad. The veteran edge rusher returns to Tampa nearly two years after his last NFL appearance. Pierre-Paul, who played a key role in the Buccaneers’ 2020 Super Bowl win with 9.5 sacks, now joins a pass-rush group featuring Haason Reddick and YaYa Diaby.
Pierre-Paul said he had been waiting for the right chance to play again, and when the opportunity came, he grabbed it. The 36-year-old defender was drafted by the New York Giants in 2010 and has played for the Giants, Buccaneers, Ravens, Saints and Dolphins during his career, collecting 94.5 sacks over 14 seasons.
The Buccaneers, currently tied for first place in the NFC South with a 7-6 record, host Atlanta on Thursday night. Pierre-Paul shared that he has been training hard with his personal trainer and feels in excellent shape, staying ready for a return to the field.
Bucs coach Larry Foote said Pierre-Paul brings qualities that coaches cannot teach, including leadership and energy. Even though he hasn’t played since December 2023, the team believes he can still contribute. Foote added that Pierre-Paul looked strong during his workout and continues to show his athletic ability.
The Buccaneers hope his experience and defensive skills will help them in the coming weeks as the division race tightens. With important games ahead, adding a seasoned player like Pierre-Paul could be a valuable move for their playoff push.
