Calgary Collision Leaves Two Hospitalized Due to Hazardous Roads

Post by : Shweta

In a concerning incident early Monday, two individuals were taken to the hospital, including one in critical condition, following a significant crash in Calgary. Authorities have issued warnings about treacherous road conditions due to inclement winter weather, raising alarms about driver safety in the area.

The collision occurred around 6:40 a.m. on Crowchild Trail N.W., close to University Drive, when a vehicle fell nearly 25 feet from an overpass to the street below, landing upside down. Reports indicate that the car had previously collided with another vehicle, breaching a traffic barrier before descending onto the northbound lanes.

Initial investigations revealed that a white Toyota Corolla, operated by a man in his 30s, rear-ended a Toyota Yaris driven by a woman in her 40s. A female passenger in the Corolla sustained life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the Corolla also suffered serious injuries. The driver of the Yaris remained uninjured. Police have indicated that there is no current evidence of alcohol or drug involvement; however, they are reviewing whether excessive speed, compounded by poor road conditions, contributed to the crash.

Officials characterized the road conditions as exceptionally perilous during the time of the accident. A police representative at the scene noted that the roadway was icy, creating significantly unsafe driving conditions. Weather alerts from Environment Canada cautioned drivers about the dangers of freezing drizzle and fog which can lead to nearly invisible layers of ice on the roads.

This incident was not unique; authorities reported numerous collisions throughout the city that same morning. Notably, a separate crash involving six vehicles, including two school buses, led to three children being transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

City representatives have urged drivers to exercise caution even as spring approaches. A City of Calgary spokesperson reminded the public that winter-like conditions can still arise in April, especially with freezing drizzle that quickly transforms roads and sidewalks into hazardous surfaces.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with authorities emphasizing the importance of slowing down, maintaining safe distances, and adapting driving behaviors to the current weather conditions.
