A severe windstorm impacted Calgary on Friday, resulting in Environment and Climate Change Canada issuing a wind warning for the area. Winds reached speeds of up to 90 km/h, leading to significant disruptions and damage.
Emergency services reported an increase in calls about fallen trees and debris. Initially, six incidents were noted overnight, which surged to approximately 30 by morning. Crews were mobilized to clear obstructed streets and maintain public safety.
The high winds also caused power lines to fall in various neighborhoods, creating dangerous situations. ENMAX, the local utility company, advised residents to steer clear of any grounded or damaged lines, emphasizing the risk of electricity traveling through objects in contact with them. Citizens were asked to report such hazards immediately.
Residential areas suffered from property damage as well. In Rundle, a portion of a house roof was blown off, and a large sign fell onto a parked car elsewhere. Loose debris amplified the hazards for residents.
Some unusual occurrences included a trampoline being lifted by the winds and blown out of a yard, underscoring the storm's severity and the risks associated with unsecured outdoor items during such weather.
Officials have urged the public to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary outings, and secure loose items around their homes. They cautioned against removing fallen branches or trees that could be near power lines due to electrocution risks.
Insurance professionals have pointed out that most homeowners' policies usually cover wind damage, including impacts from flying debris and fallen trees. However, whether vehicle damage is covered depends on the specific terms of the insurance policy.
Weather forecasts indicate that wind conditions should begin to improve overnight, providing some respite to residents. Meanwhile, safety protocols are in effect as crews handle ongoing incidents throughout Calgary.
