On April 8, 2026, the Government of Canada celebrated 13 remarkable volunteers in Montreal for their invaluable service to veterans and their families. The ceremony, led by Jill McKnight, featured the presentation of the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation to individuals who have significantly contributed to veterans' support and legacy preservation.
The selected honorees hail from various regions in Quebec, demonstrating a strong commitment to uplifting the lives of veterans while enhancing remembrance in their local communities. Some have dedicated decades to organizations aiding former service members, while others have initiated creative community endeavors and educational programs.
Among the recognized volunteers are those who have devoted years to service. Notably, some recipients collaborated with The Royal Canadian Legion, offering assistance, advocacy, and crucial community support to veterans. Their work ensures that veterans receive the respect, care, and acknowledgment they deserve.
Young volunteers were also acknowledged for their meaningful contributions. A group of youth recipients was honored for pioneering a national memorial project that seeks to commemorate fallen Canadian soldiers. This initiative not only honors sacrifices but also involves students and communities nationwide in exploring Canada’s military heritage and the significance of remembrance.
During the event, Minister McKnight stated that service to the nation extends beyond military duties. She stressed how these volunteers embody the compassion and appreciation Canadians hold for veterans. Their efforts play a vital role in keeping alive the stories and sacrifices of veterans while motivating others to contribute to their communities.
Established in 2001, the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation is awarded yearly to individuals showcasing remarkable dedication to veterans. More than 1,400 individuals have received this honor, which includes a certificate, lapel pin, and a symbolic design featuring a maple leaf and poppy.
This year’s acknowledgment highlights once more the essential part volunteers play in supporting veterans, ensuring their contributions remain honored and remembered. Through their tireless efforts, communities across Canada continue to celebrate the legacy of those who served, forging a stronger, more interconnected society.
