Canada, Quebec Reveal 77 New Affordable Housing Units

Post by : Shweta

The Canadian and Quebec governments have unveiled a significant step in their partnership to enhance affordable housing, announcing plans to construct 77 new units across three communities. This revelation came during a press conference led by Gregor Robertson and Quebec government representatives, underscoring their collective dedication to augmenting housing availability and aiding at-risk groups.

These new housing units are part of a larger initiative established under a Memorandum of Understanding, aimed at boosting residential development throughout Quebec. Authorities confirmed that around 865 affordable housing units are being facilitated under this accord, with a total investment nearing $200 million.

The three authorized projects specifically target the needs of diverse groups, including independent seniors, individuals navigating tough social or economic circumstances, and women and children escaping domestic violence. The estimated total expenditure for these initiatives exceeds $37 million, symbolizing a cooperative venture among federal, provincial, and community partners.

One significant project, helmed by Coopérative de solidarité Au cœur des Collines in Saint-Calixte, will develop 28 housing units specifically for independent seniors. Another key initiative, the Collectif Amélie Fristel project in Joliette, will construct 38 units that encompass both permanent and transitional housing for persons with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness, or who are at risk of homelessness.

Additionally, the third scheme, managed by Maison d’Ariane, will introduce 11 housing units tailored for women and children who are survivors of domestic violence, providing a nurturing and secure setting to aid residents in rebuilding their lives.

Funding for these projects is sourced jointly from federal and provincial entities through various programs, including the Quebec Affordable Housing Program and Build Canada Homes. Community organizations are pivotal in implementing these initiatives, ensuring that housing strategies align with local demands.

Officials assert that this initiative will enhance access to secure and affordable housing while fortifying communities by supporting the most vulnerable. This partnership epitomizes a unified approach to addressing housing challenges while fostering inclusive and sustainable growth across Quebec.
