Dushmantha Chameera Stars as Sri Lanka Beat Pakistan by Six

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Sri Lanka held their nerve to secure a thrilling six-run victory over Pakistan in a crucial T20I, thanks to a brilliant final over from fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera. The win ensured Sri Lanka a place in the upcoming final, keeping their title hopes alive, while Pakistan fell just short of chasing 184.

Chameera bowled a tense last over, conceding only three runs, after earlier wreaking havoc with the new ball. His opening spell had already put Pakistan on the back foot, taking three crucial wickets in his first two overs. This made the chase extremely difficult for the hosts despite a valiant effort from captain Salman Ali Agha, who scored an unbeaten half-century.

Earlier in the innings, Sri Lanka had set up a competitive total of 184 runs. Openers Kusal Mendis and Kamil Mishara shared a 36-ball 66-run partnership, giving their team a fast start. Mishara played a dominant innings, scoring 76 runs off 48 balls, while valuable contributions from the lower order helped reach a defendable score.

Pakistan began their chase positively, with Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan providing a solid start. However, Chameera quickly shifted momentum in Sri Lanka’s favour. He dismissed Farhan with a precise delivery, followed by the key wicket of Babar Azam for a duck. Fakhar Zaman fell soon after, leaving Pakistan reeling at 43 for four. Chameera’s early dominance showed his pace and skill, putting Sri Lanka in control.

Despite the early setback, Salman Ali Agha and Usman Khan rebuilt the innings with a 56-run partnership, keeping Pakistan in contention. Mohammad Nawaz also contributed effectively, bringing the team close to victory. Pakistan needed just 10 runs from the final over with Salman set at the crease. But Chameera’s calm, precise yorkers and a wicket in the closing moments ensured Sri Lanka’s win.

The game highlighted the contrast between Sri Lanka’s aggressive start and Pakistan’s steady fightback. Mendis and Mishara’s explosive batting in the early overs helped Sri Lanka post a challenging target, while Chameera’s exceptional bowling performance, particularly in the death overs, kept the opposition under pressure.

Salman Ali Agha played a measured and skillful innings under pressure. His ability to rotate strike and hit boundaries against Sri Lanka’s spin and pace attack demonstrated his batting talent. However, even his unbeaten effort could not prevent the narrow loss.

Sri Lanka’s strategy relied on building pressure through tight bowling, especially by Chameera, and taking early wickets to destabilize the Pakistan batting line-up. The combination of aggressive batting at the start and disciplined bowling at the end proved decisive.

With this win, Sri Lanka advanced to the final, while Pakistan will need to regroup after coming close in a thrilling contest. Chameera’s performance, particularly his nerve in the final over, was praised widely, and the victory reflected the team’s growing confidence and tactical execution in high-pressure T20 matches.
