In a move set to transform online shopping, PayPal (PYPL) announced a strategic partnership with AI pioneer OpenAI (OPAI.PVT) on Tuesday. This collaboration allows ChatGPT users to complete purchases instantly using PayPal, driving the company’s shares up 9% in premarket trading.
The partnership goes beyond payments. It connects OpenAI’s ChatGPT with PayPal’s global merchant network, giving users the ability to sell and shop directly within the AI-powered interface. Analysts see this as a major step toward the rise of “agentic AI” shopping tools, which autonomously research, compare, and purchase products on behalf of users.
These tools act like smart digital assistants, capable of understanding user preferences, setting budgets, monitoring prices, and even evaluating reviews over time. For consumers, this promises a faster, smarter, and more personalized shopping experience.
“By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps,” said PayPal CEO Alex Chriss.
The move also positions PayPal to leverage the growing AI-driven commerce trend, where conversational AI systems act as intermediaries between shoppers and merchants. Experts suggest this could redefine online retail by making shopping more seamless and interactive.
Alongside this partnership news, PayPal is set to release its financial results for the quarter ending September 30, offering further insight into its growth and strategic direction.
