A major fire broke out at Chevron’s oil refinery in El Segundo, Los Angeles County, lighting up the night sky on Thursday. Residents shared videos showing towering flames and thick smoke rising from the facility, which is the largest oil refinery on the US West Coast. The incident caused widespread concern in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Cause of the Fire
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed. Neither Chevron officials nor local authorities have provided details on what triggered the blaze. Emergency teams quickly responded, and authorities urged nearby residents to remain indoors for safety while the situation was assessed.
Containment and Safety Measures
Despite the dramatic visuals, the fire was contained to a specific section of the refinery. LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell reassured residents that there was no immediate danger. “It has been contained, and there is no cause for alarm for El Segundo or the surrounding areas,” she said, confirming that no evacuations were necessary.
Government Response
California Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the incident. His office stated that state and local agencies were coordinating to ensure public safety and monitor the situation closely. Authorities emphasized that they were taking all necessary precautions to prevent the fire from spreading.
Chevron Refinery Details
The Chevron El Segundo refinery is a critical facility, processing more than 276,000 barrels of crude oil each day, including gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Covering approximately 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometers), the refinery has been operational since 1911. It features over 1,100 miles (1,770 kilometers) of pipelines, making it California’s second-largest refinery.
Residents in nearby areas reported heavy smoke affecting their homes and local events. Some attendees of a soccer match had to leave early due to smoke. Local resident Mike Rogers described the scene, saying, “I thought we got nuked or something,” highlighting the fear and disruption caused by the fire.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, ensuring that the blaze remains contained and the surrounding community is safe. Firefighters and emergency personnel remain on site to prevent any flare-ups and respond immediately if conditions worsen.
While the fire caused alarm and significant smoke in El Segundo, containment measures have been successful, and there is no threat to public safety at this time. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire while keeping residents informed about safety protocols.
