China's Military Conducts Rocket Launches Near Taiwan During Major Exercises

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

In its largest military drills to date, China has fired rockets into waters surrounding Taiwan, deploying warships and aircraft around the island. These exercises have escalated regional apprehensions, as they are perceived as practicing a blockade strategy should a real conflict arise.

The drills, termed “Justice Mission 2025,” spanned approximately 10 hours on Tuesday, with rockets aimed at sea areas to the north and south of Taiwan. Fighter jets, bombers, destroyers, and amphibious assault vessels were positioned strategically around the island.

Taiwan's defense ministry confirmed the occurrence of Chinese live-fire drills near its northern maritime borders. Some debris reportedly drifted into Taiwan's adjacent maritime zone, just outside its territorial waters. Officials monitored to see if China would target the island directly, reminiscent of missile firings during prior drills last year.

Chinese military footage displayed mobile rocket launchers in action, capable of hitting targets throughout Taiwan. Security personnel from Taiwan indicated that China simulated strikes on vital defense systems, including U.S.-made armaments essential for coastal defense.

The exercise commenced shortly after the U.S. unveiled a substantial new arms package for Taiwan, which China vehemently opposes, perceiving it as unwarranted interference. Conversely, Taiwan argues that such military support is crucial for its self-defense.

President Lai Ching-te of Taiwan stated that the armed forces are equipped to protect the territory, emphasizing a desire for peace rather than conflict. He reassured the public that the government will act prudently while ensuring safety.

The military maneuvers disrupted both air travel and shipping routes. Taiwan's aviation authority noted interruptions on various flight paths, though most international services remained operational. Nonetheless, flights to nearby islands adjacent to China were halted, impacting thousands of travelers. In maritime areas, coastguard vessels from both nations trailed each other closely, resulting in heightened tensions.

Experts warn that a genuine blockade could result in significant global repercussions, as the Taiwan Strait is a vital trade artery, facilitating the flow of trillions of dollars in goods annually. Any substantial disruption would adversely affect global supply chains and economies beyond Asia.

Additionally, the drills showcased new military hardware, including sizable amphibious vessels meant for troop landings, vehicles, and aircraft. Analysts interpret these activities as indicative of China's enhancing military prowess and assurance.

While China asserts these maneuvers are defensive, many observers view them as a belligerent statement aimed at Taiwan, the United States, and the broader international community. As tensions escalate, the Taiwan situation remains a critical flashpoint in global geopolitics.
