A significant update from Japan’s government survey indicates a noteworthy shift in national security perspectives. For the first time, concerns surrounding China’s military capabilities have surged, eclipsing fears related to North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.
The survey results reveal that 68 percent of participants regard China’s military assertiveness, especially in proximity to Japan and the South China Sea, as their foremost concern. This figure has notably risen from 61 percent in a similar poll conducted three years ago, underscoring escalating public apprehension regarding China’s influence in the area.
Initiated in early November, this survey coincided with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s incendiary remarks that triggered significant diplomatic discord with Beijing. She suggested that Japan may mobilize its forces if a Chinese aggression towards Taiwan threatens Japan's safety. In retaliation, China demanded the retraction of her statement.
Additionally, Beijing has cautioned its citizens against visiting Japan while hinting at potential limitations on exports of crucial rare earth materials, essential for contemporary industries. China has further intensified military exercises near Japan and conducted expansive war maneuvers around Taiwan involving missiles, naval vessels, and aircraft.
The survey also highlights unprecedented backing for Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, with a remarkable 94 percent of respondents expressing favorable sentiments towards the military. This trend indicates an increasing trust in Japan’s armed forces amidst mounting regional tensions.
These revelations come as Japan prepares to redefine its defense strategy, anticipating a significant boost in military expenditure, aiming to escalate defense spending to 2 percent of its GDP. Despite constitutional constraints on warfare, Japan remains one of the world’s leading defense spenders.
China has criticized these military initiatives, accusing Tokyo of exacerbating regional tensions and has warned Japan against intervening in Taiwan’s affairs, which China perceives as a domestic issue.
This survey exemplifies a transformation in Japan’s security landscape. As power dynamics shift in East Asia, growing public sentiment is increasingly influencing Japan’s approach to forthcoming security challenges.
