China Appeals for Resumption of Ceasefire Talks Between Thailand and Cambodia

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

China has urged both Thailand and Cambodia to promptly establish a ceasefire and reengage in discussions aimed at peacefully settling their ongoing border disputes. Deng Xijun, the Chinese Special Envoy for Asian Affairs, underscored that prioritizing an end to hostilities is crucial for both nations.

Over the last three weeks, Thailand and Cambodia have been involved in exchanges of rockets and artillery fire along their 817-kilometer border. This escalation of conflict followed the breakdown of a truce initially arranged by Malaysia during its ASEAN chairmanship and former U.S. President Donald Trump. The ongoing violence has displaced thousands, with local communities struggling to access food and basic necessities.

China has joined other ASEAN diplomats in advocating for self-restraint and immediate measures to cease fighting. Deng Xijun has traveled to both nations to meet with senior officials and prime ministers, reinforcing China’s role in facilitating dialogue. Beijing has expressed its readiness to foster a conducive environment for mediation.

In a positive development, Thailand and Cambodia have consented to convene a meeting of their defense officials on Wednesday to deliberate on resuming the ceasefire. This initiative has garnered approval from ASEAN, which advocates for peaceful resolutions to regional disputes.

China characterizes itself as a supportive “friend” and “close neighbor” to both Thailand and Cambodia, aiming to mediate in an impartial and constructive manner. Chinese state media have touted prior successful mediation attempts, including its involvement in reconciling Iran and Saudi Arabia last year. This approach is geared toward lowering tensions and establishing a stable atmosphere for negotiations.

The Chinese government has affirmed its backing of ASEAN’s initiatives and is prepared to aid in fostering the peace conditions. By endorsing dialogue without explicitly referencing the previous Trump-led agreement, China seeks to uphold its credibility and neutrality in its mediation role.

The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia is indicative of deeper historical and territorial tensions in the region. Analysts assert that prudent diplomacy and ongoing dialogue are vital to avert further violence and safeguard civilians impacted by the conflict.

China's proactive stance in advocating for ceasefire negotiations highlights its commitment to regional stability and its readiness to assist in peaceful conflict resolution. Both Thailand and Cambodia now have an opportunity to conclude weeks of unrest and strive for a lasting solution to their border challenges.
