China has issued a stern warning to the United States, urging it not to utilize other nations as an excuse for its initiatives in Greenland amid escalating tensions regarding the Arctic territory. This remark follows U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated assertions about acquiring Greenland to prevent Chinese or Russian influence from expanding there.
During a routine press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that China’s involvement in the Arctic aligns with international laws and aims to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development. She highlighted that the U.S. should refrain from using China or any other country as a “pretext” to further its own ambitions.
Greenland, a self-governing region of Denmark, which is a NATO member, has been emphasized by Trump as crucial for U.S. national security due to its strategic Arctic location. He has indicated that military action could be a possibility, although he prefers negotiating a deal.
These statements have raised significant alarm in Denmark and Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen cautioned that a U.S. takeover of Greenland could jeopardize NATO’s unity. Leaders from Greenland have vocally expressed that their future should be determined by their people. In a unified statement, Greenland’s prime minister alongside other political figures demanded respect from the U.S. and an end to perceived disregard towards their nation.
Trump reiterated his position over the weekend, insisting that the U.S. must “take Greenland” or risk losing it to other powers, further straining diplomatic relationships between Washington, Copenhagen, and Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.
China has been intensifying its interest in the Arctic for several years; in 2018, it branded itself a “near-Arctic state” and laid out plans for a “Polar Silk Road” as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, prompting concerns within the U.S. and Europe about China's long-term ambitions in the Arctic.
In response to U.S. assertions about Greenland’s significance in countering China, Mao Ning affirmed that every nation holds the right to engage in Arctic activities following international law. She reiterated that the Arctic impacts the global community, not merely one country.
Danish and Greenlandic officials are anticipated to visit Washington this week to engage in discussions regarding these developments, coinciding with U.S. legislators planning trips to Denmark. As negotiations progress, the Greenland issue stands as a substantial test of diplomacy, international law, and the acknowledgment of smaller nations’ choices.
