Chlorine Gas Incident at Victoria Pool Leaves Eight Hospitalized

Chlorine Gas Incident at Victoria Pool Leaves Eight Hospitalized

Post by : Shweta

On April 10, 2026, a chlorine gas leak at the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre in Victoria resulted in eight hospitalizations, requiring significant emergency action that included evacuating the facility and neighboring areas.

Officials reported that the gas was released following an accidental mix of two chemicals within the pool area, leading to an uncontrolled reaction. Dan Atkinson noted that emergency services received a 911 alert shortly before noon about a potent and irritating odor that impacted the nose, mouth, and upper respiratory system.

Upon arrival, firefighters found that staff had already started evacuating patrons from the premises. Emergency responders promptly recognized the scenario as chemical exposure and began administering first aid to those affected. Eight patients experienced symptoms ranging from coughing to difficulty breathing and were transported to the hospital, with health officials later stating that all were in stable condition.

Specialized hazardous materials teams were dispatched to manage the incident. Clad in protective gear and breathing apparatus, these teams entered the facility to contain and neutralize the hazardous gas. The operation involved isolating the impacted zone while ventilating the building to ensure safety.

As a precautionary measure, residents and businesses in the vicinity were advised to stay indoors, secure windows and doors, and deactivate ventilation systems. The affected area included surrounding streets and significant locations adjacent to the facility. Public safety alerts were lifted later that afternoon as the situation was brought under control.

Moreover, police closed several roads nearby while emergency services managed the scene. More than 100 individuals were also evacuated from a nearby mosque as a safety measure.

Witnesses reported a strong chlorine scent just before emergency sirens activated. Some individuals exiting the pool were seen wrapped in emergency blankets as responders tended to those affected.

City officials announced that the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre would remain closed until early Tuesday morning for a thorough safety evaluation and cleanup. Planned programs and activities at the facility have been postponed.

The investigation into how the chemicals combined is ongoing. Authorities noted that incidents involving chlorine gas at this facility are rare and stated that safety protocols will be reviewed in light of this event.
