Chris Woakes Retires After 14-Year England Cricket Career

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

England allrounder Chris Woakes has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 36-year-old made the decision after being left out of England’s Ashes squad. His announcement ends a 14-year career in which he played in 62 Tests, 122 ODIs, and 33 T20Is.

Last Appearance for England

Woakes’ final act in an England shirt came during the fifth Test against India at The Oval. Despite dislocating his shoulder earlier in the match, he bravely walked out to bat at No. 11 with his arm in a sling, hoping to help his team secure victory. That moment summed up his fighting spirit and love for the game.

Shoulder Injury Ends Hopes

The shoulder dislocation that Woakes suffered at The Oval in July was the turning point. After months of recovery, he was still not fully fit. England selectors later confirmed that he was not part of future plans. Following that decision, Woakes announced his retirement through an emotional post on Instagram.

A Childhood Dream Fulfilled

In his farewell message, Woakes said playing for England had been his childhood dream. He thanked his family, especially his parents, wife Amie, and daughters Laila and Evie, for their constant support. He also thanked teammates, coaches, and fans for their belief and encouragement throughout his journey.

Double World Cup Winner

Woakes’ career included some of the greatest achievements in English cricket history. He was a key part of England’s 2019 World Cup victory at Lord’s, where his new-ball bowling helped secure the title. He also played an important role in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup win in Australia, making him a two-time World Cup champion.

Ashes Heroics in 2023

Woakes’ contribution to the Ashes in 2023 was one of his most memorable moments. Returning to the side midway through the series, he helped England come back from 2-0 down to level the series 2-2. His wickets and runs earned him the Player of the Series award, showing his value in the toughest battles.

Impressive Career Numbers

Across formats, Woakes took 396 wickets for England, placing him eighth on the all-time list. In ODIs, he claimed 173 wickets at an average of 30.01, making him one of England’s most successful bowlers in the format. He also scored useful runs, including a Test century against India at Lord’s in 2018.

Early Days in International Cricket

Woakes made his debut during England’s 2010–11 tour of Australia, playing two T20Is and three ODIs. In only his second ODI, he produced figures of 6 for 45, one of the best performances ever by an English bowler at the time. His Test debut came at The Oval during the 2013 Ashes series, the same ground where he played his last game for England.

Breakthrough in 2016

The summer of 2016 was a breakthrough for Woakes. Against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, he took 34 wickets in six Tests at an average of just 17.20. That series established him as a reliable Test bowler. Over time, he also became a leader in the ODI side, regularly opening the bowling and taking key wickets.

Highlights in World Cups

Woakes was vital in England’s World Cup campaigns. In the 2019 semi-final against Australia, he bowled brilliantly, taking 3 for 20. That performance helped England reach the final, where they went on to lift the trophy. His ability to perform in big matches made him one of the most trusted players in the squad.

Leading the Attack After Broad and Anderson

After the retirement of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, Woakes became one of the senior-most bowlers in the Test side. In 2024, he had his second-best year in Test cricket, taking 32 wickets at an average of 24.09. His consistency made him a dependable figure in England’s bowling lineup.

Praise From the Cricket World

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) praised Woakes for his professionalism and sportsmanship. ECB chair Richard Thompson said the image of Woakes walking out to bat with his arm in a sling showed his dedication to the team. Managing director Rob Key also called him “one of the finest people to have played the game.”

Woakes’ Legacy

Woakes leaves the international stage with respect from teammates, opponents, and fans alike. Known as a gentleman off the field and a fighter on it, his career will be remembered for his reliability, versatility, and ability to shine in big moments. His legacy includes two World Cup wins and countless contributions in both red-ball and white-ball cricket.

Although retiring from international cricket, Woakes will continue to play county cricket for Warwickshire. He has also expressed interest in franchise leagues around the world. This will allow him to stay involved in the game while managing his body after years of hard competition.

Chris Woakes’ retirement marks the end of an era for England cricket. From his dream debut to lifting World Cups and winning Ashes battles, he gave everything to his country. With nearly 400 international wickets and unforgettable performances, Woakes leaves behind a career that will inspire future generations. England fans will always remember him as a dependable, humble, and heroic cricketer.
