A sweep of Arctic air has forced the closure of hundreds of schools throughout the United Kingdom following the coldest night of winter thus far. Overnight temperatures dropped well below freezing, with Marham in Norfolk recording a chilling -12.5°C. More snowfall and severe weather disruptions loom in the days ahead.
In northern Scotland, amber weather warnings for snow are in effect until Tuesday night, predicting significant travel disruptions, power outages, and risks to life and property. Yellow warnings for potential disruptions blanket much of the UK until Tuesday morning.
Forecasters anticipate widespread snowfall ranging from 5–10cm over much of central and northern Scotland, with some regions potentially receiving up to 15cm. The Scottish Highlands, particularly Dalwhinnie, reported temperatures plunging to -11.2°C overnight. Residents should minimize travel and prepare for possible power failures.
The cold spell has significantly affected education, leading to the closure of over 330 schools in Wales and more than 170 in Northern Ireland. Authorities in Aberdeenshire, Orkney, and Shetland have also confirmed ongoing closures. In England, several schools in Norfolk and Devon have either closed or delayed their openings.
Transport services have been heavily disrupted, with rail services encountering delays due to deep snow hindering maintenance work, while some international trains have been suspended. Ferry routes along Scotland's west coast were affected, and road closures reported in parts of Wales. Icy conditions temporarily grounded flights at Liverpool John Lennon Airport before services resumed.
Forecasts suggest that the cold spell will continue, with strong winds and heavy rain expected later this week, potentially leading to further hazards. Southern England, which has seen little snow, may experience wintry conditions on higher ground by Thursday and Friday.
Health authorities have issued amber cold weather health alerts across England through the end of the week, advising especially the elderly and vulnerable to take precautions. The cold snap has also triggered cold weather payments in numerous postcode areas, offering financial assistance to households facing prolonged freezing temperatures.
As winter conditions worsen, public authorities urge everyone to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel, and prioritize safety amid the severe weather conditions.
