In a contentious presidential election, Nasry Asfura, the conservative candidate backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, has been proclaimed the winner of Honduras’ election, following numerous delays, technical issues, and allegations of irregularities. The official results were disclosed over three weeks after the voting on November 30.
The Honduran electoral authority, CNE, reported that Asfura garnered 40.3% of the votes, narrowly surpassing Salvador Nasralla from the center-right Liberal Party, who obtained 39.5%. Rixi Moncada, representing the ruling LIBRE party, finished third.
The election faced significant disputes, as technical failures in the vote-counting system resulted in officials manually counting around 15% of the ballots, impacting hundreds of thousands of votes. Supporters of the LIBRE party protested during the tallying, alleging that the election constituted an "electoral coup" and obstructing access to the counting sheets.
Notably, two electoral council members acknowledged Asfura’s win, while the third, Marlon Ochoa, was absent during the announcement. In a post-election statement, Asfura expressed determination in his new role, saying, “Honduras: I am ready to govern. I will not let you down.” He is scheduled to assume office on January 27 for a four-year term spanning 2026 to 2030.
Salvador Nasralla has rejected the official outcome, asserting that several ballots went uncounted and urging his supporters to maintain calm. "I will not accept a result based on omissions. Democracy does not cease due to exhaustion,” he remarked, labeling it a "saddest Christmas" for Hondurans. The head of Congress, Luis Redondo, similarly rejected the electoral results, indicating it lacked legal standing.
Trump’s support for Asfura during the campaign was prominent, depicting him as “the only true friend of Freedom in Honduras,” and he urged voters to support Asfura. Trump also threatened to withdraw U.S. financial assistance should Asfura lose and granted a pardon to former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, currently serving a 45-year sentence in the U.S. for drug trafficking. Trump later insinuated fraud in the vote-counting process but did not provide evidence.
Political analysts interpret Trump’s endorsement of Asfura as part of a broader endeavor to impact conservative politics in Latin America, connecting leaders from nations such as El Salvador and Argentina. Both Nasralla and the LIBRE party have criticized Trump’s involvement, characterizing it as electoral interference.
The U.S. has formally congratulated Asfura, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasizing the importance of a smooth transition. The Organization of American States (OAS) recognized the challenges throughout the electoral process and pledged to release a report detailing findings and recommendations.
Nasry Asfura, born in Tegucigalpa in 1958, has extensive experience in public service and business. He served as the mayor of the capital since 2013 and is known for his infrastructure projects, earning the nickname “Papi, at your service.” Asfura is committed to a pro-business agenda, focusing on employment, education, and security, though he currently faces an investigation regarding alleged embezzlement and money laundering, which he denies, labeling them politically charged.
Throughout his campaign, Asfura portrayed a practical image, emphasizing that voters prioritize solutions over political extremes. He stated, “Extremes don’t work. People aren’t concerned whether you’re left or right; they seek answers to their challenges.”
Asfura’s election underscores the impact of international politics and the persistent domestic rifts within Honduras. The upcoming months will prove crucial as he navigates a politically divided landscape shaped by a tightly contested election.
