COVID-19 In India: Active Cases Reach 5,364, 4 Deaths Reported In Last 24 Hours
As the nation continues to adjust to the new normal, COVID-19 In India: Active Cases Reach 5,364, 4 Deaths Reported In Last 24 Hours, raising concerns about a potential resurgence. While the numbers are far lower than peak pandemic levels, the recent uptick in cases has triggered discussions among health experts and officials.
The data, released by the Union Health Ministry on Friday, indicates a subtle but noticeable rise in active infections across several states. Although not yet classified as a major wave or threat, public health authorities have urged caution and adherence to preventive measures.
Latest COVID-19 Situation in India
As per the latest data:
Total Active Cases: 5,364
New Deaths in Last 24 Hours: 4
New Infections Reported: 625 (approx.)
These figures are part of a broader trend observed over the past week, with a steady but small daily increase in infections, mainly in urban and semi-urban areas.
Health officials have noted that most of the new cases are mild or asymptomatic, and the majority of the infected individuals have recovered within a few days of home isolation. However, the four newly reported deaths serve as a reminder that the virus is still present and dangerous, especially for vulnerable populations.
State-Wise Distribution of Active Cases
Several states have reported a marginal spike in cases. The breakdown of active COVID-19 cases is as follows (approximate data based on Health Ministry updates):
Maharashtra: 1,120 active cases
Kerala: 1,010 active cases
Delhi: 530 active cases
Karnataka: 450 active cases
Tamil Nadu: 360 active cases
Other States Combined: 1,894 active cases
While no state is currently facing a health crisis, local authorities in high-density areas have begun re-implementing testing protocols and random sampling at airports, hospitals, and public places.
New COVID-19 Variants Under Watch
The rise in cases has prompted scientists to investigate if any new variants or subvariants are driving the increase. So far, India has not reported any new variant of concern. However, the Omicron subvariants XBB.1.16 and EG.5 continue to be under surveillance.
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) scientists have confirmed that the virus is evolving, but currently circulating variants are not leading to severe disease or hospitalisation spikes.
Government and Health Ministry Response
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a statement assuring the public that the situation is under control but must not be taken lightly."The increase in active COVID-19 cases is being closely monitored. Citizens are advised to stay alert, wear masks in crowded places, and follow hygiene protocols,” the statement said.
Officials have also stressed the importance of completing booster vaccinations, especially among the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and healthcare workers.
Vaccination Drive Status
India has administered over 220 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines since the start of the pandemic. Booster dose uptake, however, remains lower than expected.
Health experts are once again urging the public to:
Get vaccinated, including booster shots
Avoid crowded and poorly ventilated spaces
Use masks in public gatherings
Wash hands frequently
Monitor symptoms and get tested if unwell
Global Perspective
India is not alone in seeing a slight rise in cases. Several countries, including the United States, China, Japan, and parts of Europe, are witnessing seasonal increases in infections, possibly due to new variants, relaxed precautions, and increased travel.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the COVID-19 pandemic is no longer a global health emergency, but the virus still poses a significant public health risk, particularly for people with comorbidities and the elderly.
Expert Opinions
Leading virologist Dr. Gagandeep Kang emphasized that while the situation is manageable, people must not let their guard down completely.“The virus hasn’t disappeared. It’s now endemic and will circulate in the community like the flu. Vaccination and sensible precautions are key,” she said in a recent interview.
Another public health expert from AIIMS, New Delhi, pointed out that the rise is expected during seasonal changes and is not unusual, but continuous monitoring is vital.
