Pat Cummins Hopes to Regain Fitness Before Ashes Series Opener

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Australia captain Pat Cummins has expressed hope that he will recover from his back injury in time for the first Ashes Test against England, scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth. The fast bowler, known for his consistent performances and leadership, is currently undergoing rehabilitation but admits that the timeline for his full recovery remains tight.

Progress in Rehabilitation Training

Speaking to the media in Sydney on Monday, Cummins provided an update on his recovery, saying that his rehabilitation is progressing steadily. “I’d say probably less likely than likely, but we’ve still got a bit of time,” he said. He explained that he is running every second day and gradually increasing the duration of each session. “Each run feels better and better, and bowling prep starts next week,” he added, outlining his plan to return to bowling soon.

Bowling Workload Still a Challenge

The 31-year-old pacer acknowledged that the real challenge will be regaining the stamina required to bowl long spells during Test matches. “You’d want at least a month in the nets,” Cummins explained. “To play a Test, you have to be confident about bowling 20 overs a day without thinking about it. Four weeks is pretty tight, but somewhere around that mark is what I’m aiming for.” His goal is to resume bowling on turf within a couple of weeks, depending on how his back responds.

Focused on Long-Term Fitness

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his availability for the first match, Cummins remains optimistic about his long-term fitness. He said this back injury is not as severe as previous ones he experienced earlier in his career. “It’s a back injury I haven’t had in seven or eight years, and I’ve played a lot of cricket since,” he said. “When I was 20, I’d have worried about what my body could handle. But now I know that if I do the rehab properly, I shouldn’t have to worry.”

Cummins stressed that he is taking a cautious but confident approach to recovery, hoping that his body will be ready for the full demands of Test cricket soon. “Hopefully, I can play as much — even more — cricket than before,” he added.

Importance of Cummins’ Role

Pat Cummins has been the backbone of Australia’s bowling attack for several years. His ability to lead both with the ball and as captain has been key to Australia’s success in recent Test series. His absence in the early part of the Ashes could affect team balance, especially against a strong English side known for its aggressive “Bazball” style of play.

The Australian selectors are expected to monitor his progress closely over the coming weeks before making a final decision on his availability. If Cummins does not recover in time, vice-captain Steve Smith or Travis Head could lead the side in Perth.

Confidence from Experience

Cummins reflected on his earlier years as a fast bowler who often battled injuries and how his mindset has matured over time. “When I was younger, I didn’t have much faith in how my body could bounce back. But now I understand what works for me. This time, we’re being patient and making sure everything is strong before I start bowling again,” he said.

His calm and realistic approach reflects his experience as a leader who values long-term success over rushing a comeback.

Ashes Schedule Announced

The Ashes 2025-26 series will feature five Test matches across Australia. The full schedule has been released:

  • First Test: November 21–25, Perth
  • Second Test: December 4–8, Brisbane
  • Third Test: December 17–21, Adelaide
  • Fourth Test: December 25–29, Melbourne
  • Fifth Test: January 3–7, 2026, Sydney

The Perth Test is expected to open with full crowds, setting the stage for another thrilling Ashes battle between Australia and England.

Cricket fans are eagerly awaiting Cummins’ return, as his presence adds stability and aggression to Australia’s bowling lineup. The selectors and coaching staff are confident that even if he misses the first match, he could still feature later in the series.

For Cummins, the priority remains ensuring he is fully fit rather than rushing into action. As he continues his rehabilitation program, the Australian team management will keep monitoring his progress closely. The coming weeks will determine whether the captain leads his side in Perth or joins later in the iconic Ashes series.
