Australia’s cricket captain Pat Cummins has begun bowling again as he continues his recovery from a lower-back injury. The star fast bowler is working hard to be fit in time for the second Ashes Test against England, scheduled to take place in Brisbane two weeks after the series opener in Perth.
Cummins was officially ruled out of the first Ashes Test, which will begin on November 21 in Perth. His absence is a big blow for Australia, as the 32-year-old paceman has been a key part of the team’s bowling attack for many years. However, team management hopes his early rehabilitation progress will allow him to make a strong comeback for the second Test.
Cummins was seen bowling off a short run-up in the practice nets at Cricket New South Wales’ training base on Tuesday. The session was closely monitored by the medical and coaching staff, who are carefully managing his workload to ensure a full recovery. While he is not yet bowling at full pace, his return to the nets marks an important step forward in his rehabilitation program.
Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald said that Cummins would need at least four more weeks to be completely ready for competitive cricket. This timeline means that the captain will likely miss any warm-up matches before the second Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. McDonald emphasized that the focus is on ensuring Cummins regains full fitness rather than rushing him back and risking further injury.
In Cummins’s absence, Steve Smith will lead the Australian side for the Perth Test. Smith has captained Australia on several occasions and is known for his strategic cricket mind and calm leadership style. His experience will be crucial as Australia look to start the series strongly against their long-time rivals, England.
Fast bowler Scott Boland from Victoria is expected to be included in the playing XI in place of Cummins. Boland has impressed in past Ashes matches with his consistency and discipline, particularly during the 2021–22 series, where he delivered memorable performances. His inclusion provides Australia with a reliable bowling option to support Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
Australia currently holds the Ashes urn, having retained it after a 2-2 series draw in England in 2023. The team’s focus now is to continue that success on home soil. With strong performances from both their batters and bowlers, Australia aims to dominate the upcoming series and maintain its edge over England.
Pat Cummins has been one of Australia’s most dependable and respected players. As both captain and fast bowler, he brings balance and leadership to the team. His ability to deliver breakthroughs and maintain pressure on opponents makes him a vital asset. The team’s support staff are taking all precautions to ensure he returns at full strength without aggravating his injury.
The goal for Cummins is to be fully fit for the second Test in Brisbane, a venue where he has performed well in the past. His return would boost Australia’s confidence and stability in the bowling lineup. The Gabba, known for its pace-friendly pitch, could provide the perfect stage for the captain’s comeback if his recovery continues smoothly.
The upcoming Ashes series promises to be another thrilling contest between Australia and England, two of cricket’s oldest rivals. With Steve Smith leading the opening Test and Pat Cummins working to return for Brisbane, the team remains optimistic. Australia’s depth in bowling and experience in home conditions will be key factors as they aim to defend the Ashes title once again.
