In a significant legal ruling, a former economic development official from Nanjing, China, has been sentenced to death for accepting bribes exceeding 2.21 billion yuan ($325 million) over 30 years. The Changzhou Intermediate People's Court announced the verdict on Monday, highlighting it as one of the largest bribery cases revealed in China in recent times. Yang Youlin was found guilty not only of bribery but also of embezzlement, offering bribes, misappropriation of public funds, and money laundering.
Yang's illegal activities spanned three decades, during which he accepted various forms of compensation including money and valuable assets from 1993 to 2023. According to the court, these bribes were linked to project approvals, land deals, and financial operations facilitated by Yang's position. The extent of the corruption makes this case one of the most notable investigations in recent Chinese history.
The investigation into Yang was part of President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has seen many officials and executives face prosecution. Some critics contend it serves to eliminate political adversaries, yet the court focused on Yang's misconduct and the solid evidence gathered during the hearings.
During the court proceedings, Yang reportedly expressed regret for his actions. Images released by the court depict the gray-haired individual, dressed in a dark jacket, standing flanked by police officers. The trial was held across two public sessions in March and April, attended by over 30 witnesses.
Following the sentencing, the court ordered Yang's assets to be confiscated, along with instructions for authorities to recover the total amount he illegally acquired through bribery. This verdict aims to ensure that all proceeds linked to the corruption case are returned through legal means.
Yang Youlin is not alone; he joins the ranks of Chinese officials who have been handed death sentences in prominent corruption cases. In 2021, Lai Xiaomin was executed for similar charges, while another official, Li Jianping, met a similar fate in 2024, underscoring China's relentless stance against rampant corruption.
