Escalating Hunger Crisis in Afghanistan as Winter Approaches

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Afghanistan is grappling with an unprecedented hunger crisis, with millions facing hardship as winter chills the region and humanitarian aid dwindles. After enduring years of turmoil, families now find themselves bereft of food and income, struggling to maintain hope.

Samiullah, 55, lives in a modest tent near Kabul alongside his wife, five children, and a three-month-old grandchild. Their meals consist solely of dry bread and tea. “We have reached a point where we are content with death,” he laments. Like many, his family was deported from neighboring countries such as Iran and Pakistan, returning home to an uncertain future.

The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) reports that 17 million Afghans face acute hunger. The situation has worsened due to recent cuts in aid and a large influx of returning migrants. Over 2.5 million Afghans were deported in the past year alone, creating an urgent need for assistance.

These families previously relied on foreign incomes to support their communities through remittances. Now, they find themselves in extreme poverty, as job opportunities are scarce, winter hampers work, and food prices continue to soar. According to WFP country director John Aylieff, the disappearance of remittances has caused an additional 3 million individuals to face acute hunger.

Aid organizations struggle to meet the increasing demand. Funding cuts have severely impacted resources for organizations like WFP, leaving many families without enough food or medical care. The crisis is particularly dire for children; experts predict that an additional 200,000 children may experience severe malnutrition by 2026.

At distribution centers, supplies of rice and palm oil often fall short for the long lines of individuals seeking help. Zahra Ahmadi, a 50-year-old widowed mother of eight, states, “Sometimes we eat, sometimes we don’t. I have to manage this winter with what little I have.” Clinics are overwhelmed with families seeking medical and nutritional assistance for their children. Dr. Rabia Rahimi Yadgari from the Qasaba Clinic in Kabul shares that patient numbers have doubled since the influx of migrants.

The crisis also stems from Afghanistan's economic collapse following the Taliban takeover in 2021, which wiped out many government jobs, leaving families without a reliable income. Laila, 30, speaks of her family's struggles amidst aid, stating, “Life never remains the same. My husband lost his job, leading our economic situation to disintegrate.”

For families returning home like Samiullah’s, this winter is particularly brutal. Firewood is in short supply, and tents offer little respite from the cold. “My children say, ‘Father, I’m cold. I’m freezing,’ I can only hold them and respond, ‘It’s OK.’ What options do we have?” he reflects.

This humanitarian dilemma in Afghanistan illustrates that the issues extend beyond mere politics. Even as global attention wanes, countless families remain ensnared in the clutches of hunger and poverty. Without a significant increase in aid and sustainable economic solutions, millions will continue to suffer, especially the children.

The international community is urged to take immediate action to avert further tragedies. Food, medical aid, and economic assistance are critically needed. In Afghanistan, winter is more than a season—it embodies a trial of humanity, survival, and collective responsibility.
