DEWA Demonstrates Dubai's Attributes in Energy and Water Resilience

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Dubai Press Club (DPC) recently welcomed His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, as part of its engaging dialogue series on Dubai's sustainable energy and water strategies, infrastructure readiness, and future growth plans.

Among the attendees was Her Excellency Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Vice Chairperson and Managing Director of the Dubai Media Council and President of the Dubai Press Club. The discussions centered on Dubai's commitment to innovation, effective crisis management, business continuity, and strategic planning, all aimed at bolstering long-term sustainability and reinforcing the emirate's leadership in essential sectors.

World-Class Energy and Water Infrastructure in Dubai

Al Tayer asserted that, under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the emirate has established what he termed the world's premier electricity and water infrastructure, providing unmatched availability, reliability, and efficiency.

DEWA is ranked first globally for 13 key performance indicators, boasting the world's shortest customer minute lost duration, averaging just 49 seconds per customer per year, along with minimal transmission and distribution losses of only 2% for electricity and 4.4% for water.

According to Al Tayer, these metrics signify Dubai's advanced infrastructure readiness for sustained development.

Priority on National Energy Security

Al Tayer stressed that both energy and water security are critical facets of the UAE’s national security strategy.

Dubai’s current electricity generation capacity is approximately 18,000 megawatts, achieved through a blend of conventional and renewable energy resources.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is a cornerstone of the emirate’s clean energy vision, acknowledged as the largest of its kind globally, incorporating photovoltaic and concentrated solar power technologies along with battery storage and green hydrogen innovations.

Al Tayer stated that by 2030, the solar park's clean energy output is projected to surpass 8,000 megawatts.

Four Guinness World Records for the Solar Park

Al Tayer proudly noted that the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park has earned four Guinness World Records, which include:

  • Highest Capacity Single-Operator Concentrated Solar Power Plant with 700 megawatts.

  • Tallest Concentrated Solar Power Tower at 263.126 metres.

  • Largest Thermal Energy Storage Plant with a capability of 15 hours.

  • Longest Continuous Concentrated Solar Power Plant Operation.

Robust Water Infrastructure Aids Emergency Readiness

Regarding water security, Al Tayer mentioned DEWA's use of state-of-the-art desalination methods, including high-efficiency reverse osmosis, ensuring consistent water supply.

He also pointed out the world’s largest desalinated water storage and recovery initiative located in underground aquifers, capable of holding up to 6 billion gallons, ready for immediate access during emergencies.

Additionally, Dubai has a water interconnection system linking with other emirates, allowing for seamless water exchange as per demand.

AI and Smart Technologies Bolster Preparedness

Al Tayer emphasized the growing importance of innovation and technology in boosting operational readiness and managing risks.

DEWA has employed artificial intelligence for better crisis prediction, risk assessment, and improved decision-making through robust digital infrastructure since 2017. A key initiative is the virtual employee, “Rammas,” developed with Microsoft for 24/7 customer service。

Smart meters and interconnected systems facilitate live monitoring of usage patterns and leak detection capabilities. The Moro data center, managed by DEWA Digital, supports AI applications, big data analytics, and cybersecurity functions.

Planning and Partnerships Ensure Service Reliability

Al Tayer revealed that Dubai successfully maintains energy and water services during emergencies through strategic planning, intelligent operations, resilient infrastructure, reserves, and strong partnerships.

These strategies have placed DEWA as a case study for reliability and sustainability while enhancing Dubai’s capacity to face future challenges with confidence.

Dubai Press Club Emphasizes Public Awareness

Her Excellency Mona Ghanem Al Marri expressed appreciation to Al Tayer for his valuable insights into the energy sector.

She underscored the significance of electricity and water services in propelling sustainable development while elevating quality of life standards. Al Marri remarked that enhancing information transparency bolsters public awareness and instills confidence in upcoming development initiatives.

Al Marri also lauded DEWA’s role in positioning Dubai as a global forerunner in clean and renewable energy. She added that effective communication nurtures responsible resource management and aligns with sustainability objectives.

Dubai Press Club Champions Knowledge Sharing

Maryam Al Mulla, Director of the Dubai Press Club, pointed out that hosting Al Tayer illustrates the club’s dedication to connecting with national figures who enhance Dubai’s standing as a global reference for strategic foresight and sustainable management of essential sectors.

She stated that Dubai’s accomplishments in energy, water, and infrastructure stem from a sound strategic vision, coordinated long-term planning, and the capacity to convert challenges into opportunities that augment competitiveness and fuel future goals.

Al Mulla also mentioned that such dialogue sessions are crucial for raising awareness of preparedness actions and showcasing Dubai’s expertise in sustainability, resilient infrastructure, and innovation.

How does Dubai ensure water security during emergencies?
Dubai utilizes advanced desalination technologies, a 6-billion-gallon underground storage project, and a water interconnection system with other emirates.

How is AI leveraged by DEWA?
Since 2017, DEWA has integrated AI, featuring the virtual assistant “Rammas,” smart meters, and digital systems for risk assessment and customer service.
