DP World Invests in Enhancing Eye Care Facilities in Abuja

DP World Invests in Enhancing Eye Care Facilities in Abuja

Post by : Bianca Haleem

DP World has revealed a new allocation of US$500,000 for the expansion of the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation (TCF) Eye Hospital located in Abuja, Nigeria. This fresh investment elevates the total financial support for the initiative to US$1.5 million since 2019.

Collaborating with TCF, DP World aims to combat preventable blindness and enhance access to quality eye care among marginalized communities. This effort is part of TCF’s “Mission for Vision” initiative, which guarantees affordable, high-quality eye treatments for everyone.

Situated in Kukwaba, Abuja, the TCF Eye Hospital offers essential services ranging from cataract to glaucoma surgeries, pediatric eye care, low vision support, and community outreach. The hospital operates on a cross-subsidy basis, where patients who can afford to pay help fund free treatments for less fortunate individuals.

Since the inception of this partnership in 2019, they have made significant strides with approximately 60,000 eye surgeries completed at the Abuja facility, 63% of which were offered at no cost. The hospital also engages in outreach programs extending up to 100 kilometers from Abuja, providing complimentary screenings, transportation, surgeries, medications, and post-operative care.

This latest investment will increase the hospital's bed capacity from 82 to 160. Additionally, plans for a training institute aim to cultivate local eye care professionals, thereby enhancing healthcare capacity in Nigeria.

DP World emphasizes that this initiative showcases its dedication to generating lasting social impacts in areas of operation. The company also plays a vital role in Nigeria’s logistics and freight sectors, significantly benefitting the nation’s economy.
