Dubai Unveils AED34B Gold Line Metro Initiative

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has authorized the launch of the Gold Line, marking Dubai’s most significant public transportation initiative yet.

With a comprehensive budget of AED34 billion, this project will consist of a fully underground metro line stretching 42 kilometers and encompassing 18 stations. It will be Dubai’s first entirely subterranean metro line.

The new Gold Line will provide seamless connectivity with existing Red and Green Lines of the Dubai Metro and will also merge with Etihad Rail, enhancing transportation links throughout the UAE.

Project Timeline and Goals

Construction will commence shortly, with the project set to conclude by September 9, 2032. Delivery timelines are anticipated to be 30% quicker than those of the Blue Line.

According to Sheikh Mohammed, the Gold Line will connect 15 vital sites around Dubai, serving an estimated 1.5 million passengers, while also facilitating transportation for over 55 significant development projects.

Main Route and Connectivity Details

The Gold Line will initiate at Al Ghubaiba, traversing major locations such as:

  • Mina Rashid

  • City Walk

  • Business Bay

  • Mohammed Bin Rashid City

  • Meydan

  • Al Barsha South

  • Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC)

  • Jumeirah Golf Estates

The line will connect to:

  • Red Line at Business Bay and Jumeirah Golf Estates

  • Green Line at Al Ghubaiba

  • Etihad Rail at Meydan and Jumeirah Golf Estates

Impacts on Transport and Economy

The Gold Line is projected to:

  • Accommodate over 465,000 daily commuters by 2040

  • Alleviate congestion in key metro corridors by 23%

  • Eliminate more than 40 million car trips annually

  • Expand the metro system by 35%

Upon completion, the Dubai Metro’s length will increase from 120 km to 162 km, while the number of stations will escalate from 67 to 85.

Officials anticipate a 430% economic return over 20 years, achieved through time savings, decreased fuel consumption, reduced accidents, and lower carbon emissions.

Innovative Technology and Development

The Gold Line will utilize cutting-edge tunnel boring technology, aiming for minimal disturbance to local residents. The project will also be steered by Emirati experts, highlighting local capabilities in large-scale infrastructure initiatives.

Enhancing Dubai’s Transport Framework

Since its inception in 2009, the Dubai Metro has catered to over 2.8 billion passengers, indicating a robust rise in public transport adoption. The Gold Line is poised to significantly contribute to Dubai’s long-term vision of becoming one of the foremost global cities.
