Dubai Customs has played a key role in preventing a major drug trafficking attempt after providing intelligence that led to the seizure of approximately 1.332 tonnes of Tapentadol tablets destined for an African country. The operation successfully stopped the narcotic consignment from reaching illegal markets and highlighted the growing importance of international customs cooperation.
According to officials, the shipment originated in Asia and was transported through air cargo channels before being identified through intelligence monitoring systems. Information shared by Dubai Customs enabled authorities in the destination country to intercept the consignment before it could be distributed.
The operation demonstrates Dubai Customs’ expanding role in global security efforts. Beyond protecting the UAE’s borders, the authority now works closely with international agencies and law enforcement partners to combat transnational crime, narcotics trafficking and organised smuggling networks.
Dubai Customs relies on its Customs Intelligence Department and Special Task Force to monitor commercial and logistical data, identify suspicious activities and track potential smuggling operations. Officials said advanced risk analysis systems played an important role in detecting indicators linked to the illegal shipment.
The authority has also invested heavily in modern technologies, including radiographic scanning equipment, artificial intelligence-powered image analysis and specialised detection systems. These tools help improve inspection accuracy while ensuring the smooth flow of legitimate trade through ports and cargo terminals.
Director-General of Dubai Customs, Dr. Abdulla Busenad, said the successful operation reflects Dubai’s position as a trusted partner in the international security system. He stressed that investment in technology, human expertise and global partnerships remains essential in confronting increasingly sophisticated criminal networks.
Officials from the African country involved in the operation praised the intelligence support provided by Dubai Customs, describing it as a decisive factor in the successful interception of the shipment. The authority reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening international cooperation, securing global supply chains and protecting communities from the dangers of narcotics trafficking.
