Dubai Humanitarian Aids WHO in Combatting Ebola Crisis in Congo

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In response to a new strain of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Dubai Humanitarian has mobilized an emergency airlift of crucial medical supplies. This initiative, executed under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).

The consignment, featuring 20 metric tonnes of essential medical goods sourced from WHO’s emergency stockpile located in Dubai, was dispatched from Al Maktoum International Airport, passing through Uganda to support healthcare efforts in eastern Congo, where local authorities are striving to curb the virus.

These supplies aim to assist hundreds of patients in the upcoming four weeks and bolster approximately 280 healthcare facilities in impacted regions. Vital items in the shipment include multipurpose tents, disinfectants, personal protective equipment (PPE), thermometers, and other essential resources necessary for disease containment, management, and preventing infection.

Giuseppe Saba, CEO and Board Member of Dubai Humanitarian, affirmed the organization's dedication to collaborating swiftly with humanitarian partners during global health crises. He emphasized the importance of the swift delivery of life-saving supplies amidst the rising Ebola case numbers. Furthermore, he mentioned that Dubai Humanitarian is poised to continue supporting relief initiatives through its Global Humanitarian Impact Fund and partnerships with the Dubai Royal Air Wing.

Saba also pointed out the increasing hurdles humanitarian agencies face globally, such as disruptions in supply chains and constrained funding. In spite of these challenges, Dubai Humanitarian remains on track, working alongside international partners and the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), to guarantee that vital medications and emergency supplies reach those in need.

Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, commended the UAE and Dubai Humanitarian for their unwavering support in respond to global health emergencies. She underscored the significance of swift actions and international collaboration in a climate of heightened attention following the declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Moreover, Dr. Balkhy noted that this airlift exemplifies the importance of strong partnerships in addressing health crises. The supplies delivered will greatly assist frontline healthcare providers in quickly recognizing, containing, and addressing Ebola cases while ensuring their safety as they cater to patients and impacted communities.

Dubai Humanitarian has been instrumental in international health responses historically. During the West Africa Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016, the organization functioned as a key global logistics hub, aiding United Nations agencies and humanitarian organizations in providing medical aid and relief materials to the nations most severely affected by the illness.

The recent Ebola response underscores Dubai’s unwavering commitment to aiding global humanitarian initiatives and supporting nations confronting urgent health crises. As Congo strives to control the outbreak, the on-time arrival of these medical resources is anticipated to bolster healthcare capabilities and reinforce efforts against the deadly virus.
