RTA Enhances Hessa Street Project, Journey Time Slashed to Just 4 Minutes

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has inaugurated the complete Hessa Street Development Project, spanning 4.5 kilometers from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road. This initiative is designed to enhance traffic efficiency and significantly shorten travel durations along one of the city's most heavily trafficked corridors.

Key upgrades include expanding Hessa Street from two to four lanes in each direction, along with critical enhancements at four major intersections: Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. These modifications have effectively increased the roadway's capacity from 8,000 vehicles per hour to an impressive 16,000 vehicles in both directions.

As a direct result, travel times in this corridor have drastically improved from 15 minutes to merely 4 minutes, facilitating quicker commutes for daily users.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General, emphasized that this project aligns with Dubai's aspirations to enhance infrastructure and mobility, addressing the demands associated with rapid urban expansion. He noted that Hessa Street serves crucial residential communities, including Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle, where the population is projected to exceed 640,000 by 2030.

Highlights of the Development:

  • Construction of a new two-lane ramp above the Dubai Metro Red Line for more seamless access from Sheikh Zayed Road to Hessa Street.
  • Expansion of the First Al Khail Street bridge to four lanes in both directions.
  • A parallel bridge at Al Asayel Street to boost capacity.
  • Directional ramps and additional bridges at Al Khail Road to facilitate connections towards Sharjah and Deira.

Moreover, RTA has commenced Phase 2 of the initiative, which will further extend Hessa Street from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road over an additional 3 kilometers. This phase involves constructing 8,835 meters of bridges and a 480-meter tunnel.

Phase 2 is anticipated to augment road capacity from 4,000 to 8,000 vehicles per hour and decrease travel time from 24 minutes to just 5 minutes. It aims to enhance connectivity among various key communities, including Jumeirah Village Circle, Arjan, Dubai Science Park, Al Barsha South, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, and Emirates Hills.

This project is set to benefit approximately 650,000 residents and accommodate nearly half a million trips each day, signifying a significant advancement in Dubai's transportation landscape.
