In a significant move to commemorate the 20th anniversary of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's leadership, Dubai Municipality, in conjunction with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), has initiated a campaign to plant 20,000 trees throughout the city.
The launch took place at the Quranic Garden in Al Khawaneej, with Furjan Dubai acting as the community partner. Various Directors General and CEOs from Dubai’s governmental bodies participated in the planting efforts alongside students and local community members.
Notable attendees included Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary-General of Dubai’s Executive Council; Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, Director General of the Community Development Authority; Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al-Falasi, Director General of Dubai Government Human Resources; Dr. Alawi Alsheikh Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority; Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality; and Aisha Abdulla Miran, Director General of KHDA, among others.
This initiative aligns with the Urban Environment pillar of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, aimed at expanding green spaces, enhancing urban landscaping, and fostering a healthier environment throughout the emirate.
Dubai Municipality will oversee the operational aspects, providing a selection of ornamental trees, fruit trees, and shrubs that will be planted in key areas, such as Al Barsha South, Al Barsha Pond Park, Nakheel Park in Al Aweer, and more.
To ensure sustainability, smart irrigation and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies will be utilized for optimal water usage and tree health. Long-term maintenance, regular monitoring, and a dedicated support hotline are part of the initiative.
KHDA will support schools and universities by coordinating sapling distribution and guidance for safe planting activities, encouraging students to engage and learn about environmental responsibility.
Furjan Dubai will manage community involvement, organize volunteer efforts, handle sapling collection points, and promote the initiative through digital platforms to enhance public engagement.
This initiative underlines Sheikh Mohammed’s commitment to sustainability, serving as a collective endeavor between the government and the community. By planting 20,000 trees across various locations, the initiative aspires to create a lasting environmental impact and enhance the quality of life in Dubai.
