Easter Egg Hunt Leads to Discovery of Possible Child Remains

Post by : Bianca Haleem

LONG BEACH, CA – What began as a festive Easter egg hunt for a California family on Sunday, April 5, took a grim twist when they discovered what are believed to be human remains, possibly those of a young child, at DeForest Park.

The Long Beach Police Department was alerted by the family later that evening after they uncovered a skull and several bones amidst the colorful Easter eggs. An investigation was swiftly initiated with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office present to assess the remains.

Lt. Benjamin Vargas informed the Los Angeles Times, "Each case is distinct. The process usually commences with determining whether the remains are indeed human, a decision yet to be confirmed by the Medical Examiner in this case. There is no specific timeline for the results."

Witnesses recounted the unsettling scene. Marc Zaldana, who was nearby, expressed to KCBS, "Initially, we noticed the family engaged in their Easter egg hunt, but they started to panic. It must have been a very shocking moment for them."

As of Monday, April 6, Long Beach police were pending results from forensic anthropology. Should the remains be verified as human, identifying them could take up to three weeks via dental records, fingerprints, or DNA. However, if the remains are extensively decomposed, the identification process could be significantly prolonged.

This unsettling discovery has left the local community in shock, underlining the unforeseen difficulties that can emerge even during cherished family celebrations. Authorities are diligently pursuing the investigation into the origins of the remains.
