Egypt and US Discuss Regional Crises

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and US President's Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos discussed developments in Sudan, Libya and the Horn of Africa during a phone call on Monday, according to Egypt's Foreign Ministry.

Focus on Political and Diplomatic Solutions

The two officials stressed the importance of continued coordination over developments in the three regions. They also backed political and diplomatic approaches to the crises, with the aim of strengthening security and stability across Africa.

Egypt Reaffirms Support for Sudan

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for Sudan's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also stressed the importance of preserving Sudan's national institutions and rejected the creation of parallel entities inside the country.

Humanitarian Aid and Sudan Political Process

Egypt also called for humanitarian assistance to reach people affected by the conflict in Sudan. Abdelatty stressed the need for an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process that could help address the country's crisis and support a path toward stability.

Horn of Africa Security Concerns

On the Horn of Africa, Abdelatty stressed that countries in the region should respect each other's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. He warned against unilateral actions that could threaten regional peace and security, including efforts to secure maritime access through actions that violate international law.

Support for Somalia Mission

Abdelatty also highlighted the importance of providing the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, known as AUSSOM, with adequate funding and support. He said this would help the mission carry out its mandate and protect security gains made in Somalia.

Egypt Calls for Libya Political Settlement

Regarding Libya, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's support for Libya's unity, sovereignty and national institutions. He called for progress toward a comprehensive Libyan-led political settlement that could lead to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, reduce political division and improve stability.

US Praises Egypt's Regional Role

Massad Boulos praised Egypt's efforts to reduce regional tensions and support the unification of Libya's institutions. The discussions reflect continued diplomatic engagement between Cairo and Washington on major security and political challenges across North Africa and the Horn of Africa.
