Emirati Arts Take Center Stage in the US at Abu Dhabi Festival

Post by : Bianca Haleem

This November, the Abu Dhabi Festival Abroad enchanted audiences across the United States, showcasing Emirati artistic flair at renowned cultural venues. Guided by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s vision, the festival's cultural diplomacy initiative orchestrated performances and dialogues that merged Middle Eastern and Western musical influences.

The program featured standout events, including the US debut of Shams Wujoudi, a piece by Faraj Abyad that reinterprets Syrian folk melodies and muwashahat through a blend of Eastern maqams and Western orchestration. This performance at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre was not only accompanied by curated visuals from the Barjeel Art Foundation but also included the newly established Athar Orchestra.

At Carnegie Hall, attendees experienced the world premiere of the opera A Journey to the New World, performed by the Reina Sofía School of Music Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by Maestro Andrés Orozco-Estrada, the program featured works by Albéniz, Barber, and Dvořák, supplemented by contributions from Emirati cellist Elham Al Marzooqi, violinist Renaud Capuçon, and talents from the Colombian Youth Philharmonic.

Beyond musical presentations, the festival facilitated discussions on cultural dialogue. The Arts in Embassies forums in New York on November 14 and in Washington, D.C. on November 18 convened artists including Al Marzooqi, Abyad, Kinan Azmeh, and Kate Seely, spotlighting the impactful role of music in fostering cross-cultural understanding and collaborative inventiveness.

Through these global showcases, the Abu Dhabi Festival not only uplifts Emirati artists but also forges significant cultural exchanges, providing international audiences a window into the UAE’s burgeoning artistic impact worldwide.
