Sharjah Celebrates Arabic Poetry at Book Fair with Sheikh Sultan

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Sharjah's vibrant literary atmosphere thrived tonight as His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, the Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, attended the "Asmar Podcast" event, part of the esteemed Sharjah International Book Fair at Expo Centre Sharjah. This engaging session immersed attendees in the rich tradition, beauty, and cultural significance of Arabic poetry.

Guided by Dr Faisal Al Shahrani, the podcast brought together poets Abdullah Al Anzi and Hosni Malek, who explored the diverse landscape of Arabic poetry. They discussed its historical roots, its impact on Arab culture, and its role in today’s media landscape. The conversation tackled how poetry serves as a mirror to the feelings, traditions, and societal dynamics of the Arab world.

Emphasizing the contributions of iconic poets like Al-Mutanabbi, Abu Firas Al Hamdani, Abu Tammam, Al Bardouni, and Ahmed Shawqi, the dialogue traversed themes of love, bravery, satire, and the duality of joy and sorrow. The artistry of these poets was examined, revealing their ability to weave together contrasting themes—such as love and battle—while maintaining lyrical integrity.

Participants enjoyed excerpts from various eras, showcasing the linguistic prowess and adaptability of Arab poets. Personal anecdotes shared about these poets' lives underscored how individual experiences influenced their celebrated works. A rich analysis of poems addressing similar themes highlighted the distinct voice and emotional depth each poet contributed to their craft.

Kicking off the session, Abdullah Al Anzi shared a poignant poem honoring Sharjah as a beacon of knowledge and creativity, acknowledging its support for poets, scholars, and thinkers through its ongoing literary programs. The event left a lasting impression, reinforcing the enduring relevance and vibrancy of Arabic poetry in today's cultural landscape.
