EU Immigrant Numbers Reach Historic 64 Million in 2025

Post by : Shweta

In 2025, the count of immigrants residing within the European Union has surged to a record 64 million, reflecting significant ongoing migration trends in the area. As per recent findings, foreign-born individuals now constitute approximately 14% of the total EU population, showing consistent growth over the last ten years.

Data sourced from Eurostat and the UNHCR indicates a notable rise in the immigrant population from about 40 million in 2010. Although an increase of 2.1 million was recorded in 2025, the growth rate has somewhat stabilized compared to the previous year, hinting at a gradual transition in migration dynamics.

Germany stands out as the prime destination for immigrants in the EU, accommodating nearly 18 million foreign-born residents. This showcases a substantial rise from approximately 10.5 million two decades ago, emphasizing Germany's pivotal role as a migration hub. A substantial share of these immigrants—around 72%—are of working age, significantly influencing the labor market and the economy.

In terms of refugee population, Germany also leads the bloc, hosting about 2.7 million refugees seeking asylum, which further accentuates its crucial position in addressing both economic migration and humanitarian influx.

Conversely, Spain is experiencing the most rapid surge in immigrant numbers, having welcomed around 700,000 new foreign-born residents in just one year. This swift growth signals shifting migration trends within the EU, where southern nations are becoming more attractive for newcomers.

Notably, despite the growth in the overall immigrant count, asylum applications across the EU have seen a significant drop of 26.6% in 2025 compared to the prior year. This trend implies that while long-term migration is on the rise, the influx of new asylum seekers appears to be declining.

In summary, the latest statistics highlight migration as a fundamental element influencing the demographic and economic aspects of the EU. The ongoing growth, albeit at a slower rate alongside dwindling asylum claims, suggests an evolving landscape of migration within the region.
