The conversation around artificial intelligence potentially displacing established software continues in the tech industry. However, George Kurtz, CEO of CrowdStrike, is clear: AI is not a competitor to software; instead, it acts as a crucial partner.
In a talk on CNBC's Squawk on the Street, Kurtz stressed that AI will not lead to the demise of software-as-a-service (SaaS) or cloud computing platforms. “I don’t believe AI will kill software. It’s essential for securing AI itself,” he asserted. Kurtz contends that AI and software have a mutually beneficial relationship, which is destined to grow as companies adopt AI technologies across all operations.
CrowdStrike has been incorporating AI into its Falcon platform, which enhances its ability to identify and mitigate cybersecurity threats swiftly compared to human intervention. Kurtz pointed out that software remains critical not only for securing traditional infrastructures but also for protecting AI models. “They are interdependent. You cannot have one without the other,” he added.
Some experts have posited that autonomous AI could replace traditional SaaS functionalities by carrying out intricate digital tasks on its own. Kurtz refuted this notion, suggesting that AI will actually fuel SaaS growth by allowing software firms to provide more effective, flexible, and secure solutions.
The discussion also covered recent significant cloud service outages, notably the Amazon Web Services incident that impacted global businesses. Kurtz acknowledged that as digital ecosystems grow in complexity and interconnectedness, such incidents are bound to occur. These challenges illustrate the necessity for evolving cybersecurity measures to keep pace with AI, thereby avoiding widespread failures.
Kurtz further noted the geopolitical implications surrounding AI and cybersecurity. As nations harness AI for competitive advantages, the threat of state-sponsored cyberattacks on AI infrastructures rises. “Humans have historically created problems, and AI could amplify those dangers,” he remarked, emphasizing the urgent need for preemptive defenses in an AI-centric landscape.
In conclusion, rather than supplanting software, AI is positioned to enhance its intelligence, resilience, and overall importance in the future of digital security and service offerings.
