Fairphone Debuts Repairable Headphones in U.S., Eyes Future Phone Launch

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Dutch ethical electronics maker Fairphone has entered the U.S. market with its range of repairable headphones, positioning the move as a first step before a planned smartphone introduction and a push for more sustainable device lifecycles.

Right-to-Repair Momentum

CEO Raymond van Eck said the United States is becoming more receptive to the right-to-repair movement, with consumers and policymakers increasingly resistant to products that are costly or difficult to fix. That shift creates room for firms that promise durability and straightforward repairs.

Van Eck added that Fairphone is preparing for shifting conditions and sees stable demand for devices designed to be fixed rather than discarded.

Sales Growth and Tariff Context

Fairphone reported strong growth in 2025: third-quarter revenue rose 61% year-on-year, with device sales up 61%, audio product sales increasing 40%, and spare-part purchases climbing 41%. The company aims to reproduce its European audio performance in the U.S.

The business faces a 34% tariff on its products but continues to prioritise supply-chain transparency and sustainability, from ethically sourced mining to traceable components.

Extended Support Strategy

Fairphone’s lead model, the Fairphone 6, distinguishes itself with long-term backing: a total eight-year support window, five years of warranty cover and parts available through 2033. The policy is designed to cut electronic waste and encourage longer use.

U.S. Launch Plan

The headphones will initially be available via Amazon as a tactical entry point into a market where more than 90% of smartphones are sold through carriers. Fairphone’s phased approach reflects caution amid fluctuating tariff conditions.

As sustainability and repairability weigh more heavily in purchasing decisions, Fairphone’s U.S. introduction could signal broader change in consumer electronics toward less disposable options.
