The Indian women's national U-17 football team has touched down in Suzhou, brimming with confidence as they prepare for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026. Under the guidance of head coach Pamela Conti, the Young Tigresses are eager to take on some of Asia's top football teams while vying for a spot in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2026 in Morocco.
Kicking off their Group B campaign, India will face the Australia U-17 team on May 2, followed by matches against Japan on May 5 and Lebanon on May 8, all at the Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre.
This tournament is critical for India, as only the best teams will qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup later this year. The Indian squad sees this competition as a chance to not only challenge Asia's best but to also make history.
Coach Conti emphasized before their departure that the team would not take a defensive stance, despite facing formidable opponents like Japan and Australia. Her mantra is clear: compete fiercely and exhibit courage on the field.
She reaffirmed that the players are dedicated to putting forth their best effort, focusing on an attacking style of play to command respect from their rivals.
Conti also expressed that the pressure of the tournament is a motivating factor for her and the players, seeing it as an opportunity to grow and perform at their best.
Preparation for this tournament has been extensive, with months of rigorous training camps in Bengaluru, coupled with participation in the SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship in Nepal, where they emerged victorious. The team also competed in international friendlies in Myanmar and Russia to fine-tune their skills.
Praising the discipline and commitment of her players, Conti noted that many have stood apart from their families for nearly four months, illustrating their passion and dedication to India.
Among the players to watch is captain Julan Nongmaithem, just 15 years old, who has already made waves in senior football and is ready to lead her teammates through the continental competition.
Conti regards Julan as vital for the team’s success but stresses that victory will depend on collective teamwork rather than individual talent.
The team will also rely on the prowess of Anushka Kumari and Pearl Fernandes, both of whom have showcased a remarkable goal-scoring record in youth tournaments, but the coaching staff maintains that a unified team structure is key.
Indian football fans are eagerly following the team's journey as hope grows for an impactful performance in the tournament, especially given past struggles in major Asian competitions. The U-17 squad aims to redefine expectations with a courageous and assertive mentality.
With robust preparation, unwavering confidence, and a unified squad, India is set to step into the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup, ready to challenge the best and aim for a historic entry into the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
