Tragic Capsizing of Fishing Boat in Malaysia Claims One Life

Post by : Shakul

A sorrowful incident unfolded on Friday night as a squid jigging vessel capsized near Kuala Terengganu, leading to the loss of one crew member's life. Eight others were successfully rescued, although three passengers suffered injuries during the mishap.

The boat went down about nine nautical miles off Dataran Kuala Nerus at approximately 9 p.m. Prompt rescue operations were initiated following distress calls, with survivors brought ashore later that night.

Fatality Confirmed

The deceased has been identified as 37-year-old Ahmad Nasaruddin Mohmad Jalil. His remains were subsequently taken to Sultan Zainal Abidin Hospital for further examination.

Those injured were transported to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for care, while the rest of the rescued individuals emerged from the ordeal with minor injuries.

Rapid Sinking

The operator reported that the boat was functioning normally prior to seawater flooding the engine compartment.Despite attempts to steer towards nearby boats for support, the situation escalated, leading to a quick sinking.

Within mere minutes, the vessel capsized, with everyone aboard struggling to stay afloat until rescuers arrived.

Investigating the Capsizing

Initial reports indicate that choppy seas may have allowed water to invade the engine compartment. However, the precise cause remains under investigation by authorities.

Occupancy Details

Onboard were the operator, a crew member, and ten participants; tragically, one crew member died, three sustained injuries, while the others were rescued after 30 to 40 minutes in the sea.

Safety Measures Implemented

The boat's operator stated all guests were advised to wear life jackets and remain calm prior to capsizing—actions which likely contributed to some lives being saved.

Successful Rescue Efforts

Survivors managed to stay afloat by clinging to life jackets and each other. The operator swam a considerable distance to flag down another vessel, aiding in the rescue operation.

All rescued individuals were later conveyed to Tok Batin Jetty and subsequently assessed at local hospitals.

Squid jigging is widely popular in Malaysia's fishing seasons, particularly in Terengganu, attracting visitors during evening outings when squid activity peaks.

This tragic event underscores the critical need for stringent maritime safety measures and vigilant weather checks before embarking on fishing expeditions.

Ongoing Investigations

Police and maritime authorities are actively analyzing the capsizing circumstances. Investigators will evaluate the vessel's condition, environmental factors, and performance specifics related to the engine.

Authorities urge all recreational boat operators to exercise caution amid rough seas and prioritize safety at all times.
