Madrid Building Collapse Kills Four During Hotel Renovation

Madrid Building Collapse Kills Four During Hotel Renovation

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

A six-storey building in central Madrid collapsed during renovation work, killing four people and injuring three others. The property was being converted into a hotel, and the incident occurred nearly 15 hours before authorities recovered the victims. Emergency teams, including firefighters and police, worked tirelessly using drones and sniffer dogs to locate the missing individuals.

Victims Identified

Authorities confirmed that the four fatalities included three men aged 30 to 50 from Ecuador, Mali, and Guinea-Conakry, who were employed as construction workers, and a 30-year-old woman, the architect overseeing the renovation. The three injured workers were promptly treated for their injuries at nearby medical facilities.

Eyewitness Account

One construction worker, Mikhail, who was outside pumping concrete during the collapse, described a large cloud of dust and immediately fleeing the site. He emphasized his instinct to save his own life while hoping to assist others if possible.

Building History and Condition

The building, originally constructed in 1965, had undergone technical inspections in 2012 and 2022. Both inspections classified the property as "unfavourable" due to the deteriorated condition of the facade, partition walls, roof, terraces, and plumbing systems. Despite the warnings, renovation work to convert the building into a four-star hotel was approved in December 2024.

Project Details

The building, situated in a downtown Madrid area popular with tourists, including proximity to the opera house and royal palace, was being renovated by a developer for high-end hospitality purposes. The property is owned by Saudi-based fund RSR, specializing in luxury hotels and tourist apartments in Spain and Portugal. RSR acquired the building in 2022 for €24.5 million ($28.5 million), and the renovation was planned to last two years.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collapse, taking into account the building's age and previous inspection reports. The incident has raised concerns about construction safety and the management of renovation projects in older urban buildings.

The collapse shocked residents and workers in Madrid, drawing attention to the importance of stringent safety measures during construction activities. Emergency teams, municipal authorities, and construction firms are reviewing procedures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The Madrid building collapse serves as a tragic reminder of the risks associated with urban renovation projects, particularly in older structures. Authorities and the construction community are now focused on ensuring stronger safety compliance to protect workers and residents.
