France has officially summoned the United States ambassador in Paris, Charles Kushner, after he wrote a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron accusing France of not doing enough to combat antisemitism. This move has created a new diplomatic rift between two of the world’s closest allies, France and the United States, and has sparked widespread debate in both countries.
Why France Summoned the US Ambassador
On Sunday, France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs released a strong statement. In the statement, the French government explained that Ambassador Kushner’s letter contained allegations that it described as “unacceptable.” The ministry announced that Kushner had been summoned to appear at the French foreign office on Monday.
Summoning an ambassador is one of the strongest diplomatic tools a country can use to show displeasure. It is a formal notice that relations are strained and that one government is deeply unhappy with the actions or statements of another.
What Did Kushner Say in His Letter?
The exact contents of Ambassador Kushner’s letter have not been made public. However, French officials confirmed that in the letter, Kushner claimed France was not doing enough to fight antisemitism. His comments seemed to suggest that France was failing to protect its Jewish population from rising antisemitic incidents.
These allegations struck a nerve in Paris, as France has a long history of both struggles and efforts in dealing with antisemitism. The French foreign ministry immediately rejected the claims. Officials said French authorities had been “fully mobilized” to tackle antisemitic acts, especially since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
The ministry added that such allegations from a foreign diplomat were a violation of international law, because ambassadors are not supposed to interfere in the internal affairs of their host countries.
The US Stands by Its Ambassador
While France expressed its anger, the United States did not step back. A spokesperson for the US State Department, Tommy Pigott, said on Sunday evening that the US government stood by Ambassador Kushner’s comments.
Pigott praised Kushner, saying: “Ambassador Kushner is our US government representative in France and is doing a great job advancing our national interests in that role.”
The White House itself has not yet issued a direct response, but by defending Kushner’s remarks, Washington made it clear that it does not believe the ambassador did anything wrong.
Who Is Charles Kushner?
Charles Kushner is not a career diplomat. He is a wealthy real estate developer from the United States. He is also well-known because he is the father of Jared Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, the daughter of former US President Donald Trump.
Charles Kushner has had a controversial past. Years ago, he pleaded guilty to tax evasion and making illegal campaign donations. However, he was pardoned by Donald Trump at the end of Trump’s first term as president. This allowed him to take up roles again in public life, including his current position as ambassador to France.
France’s Position on Antisemitism
France is home to the largest Jewish community in Western Europe. Nearly half a million Jews live in France, which is about one percent of the country’s total population. Because of this, antisemitism is a sensitive and serious issue in the country.
The French foreign ministry stressed that it has been working hard to protect Jewish communities, synagogues, schools, and cultural institutions. After the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, antisemitic incidents rose sharply in Europe, including in France. French authorities called these acts “intolerable” and insisted they are fully committed to fighting them.
Macron Rejects Netanyahu’s Accusations
This latest tension comes only days after French President Emmanuel Macron faced criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu claimed that France’s consideration of recognizing a Palestinian state was fueling antisemitism. Macron rejected those accusations, saying that France’s decisions about foreign policy could not be blamed for acts of hate.
Now, with Kushner’s letter, France is once again defending its record against such allegations.
Diplomatic Tensions Between France and the US
This dispute over antisemitism is only one part of a larger picture of strained relations between France and the United States in recent years.
Trade War: Tensions have grown due to Donald Trump’s trade policies, which have often clashed with Europe’s economic interests.
UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon: France strongly opposes Washington’s push to reduce or end the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL. A vote on the mission is scheduled at the United Nations Security Council at the end of this month. France believes UNIFIL plays a crucial role in stabilizing Lebanon, while the US has been questioning its effectiveness.
Ukraine War: Although the US and France initially had differences over how to support Ukraine against Russia, this split has somewhat narrowed. Recently, Trump expressed support for offering Ukraine security guarantees. Macron also had a warm meeting with Trump and other European leaders at the White House last week, showing signs of cooperation.
Why This Incident Matters
Diplomatic summoning is not a casual move. It shows that France feels the remarks from Ambassador Kushner cross a line. France believes that accusing it of failing to protect Jews not only undermines its internal policies but also damages the trust that should exist between allies.
The French foreign ministry went as far as saying that Kushner’s comments “fall short of the quality of the transatlantic partnership” between France and the United States. This means Paris sees the remarks as harmful to one of the most important international alliances in the world.
It is still unclear how this incident will affect the broader relationship between France and the United States. Much will depend on how both governments choose to handle the matter in the coming weeks.
For now, the fact that Washington has openly supported Kushner suggests the US is not willing to back down. France, however, has made it clear that it considers the allegations both insulting and unacceptable.
With other major issues on the table—such as the war in Ukraine, peacekeeping in Lebanon, and global trade disputes—both sides may eventually seek to calm the situation. However, this latest controversy shows just how fragile even strong alliances can become when sensitive topics like antisemitism and domestic policy are involved.
