Hundreds of firefighters were deployed to battle a large wildfire that swept through the Herault and Aude departments in southern France. The blaze spread rapidly as prolonged drought conditions and strong winds fueled the flames, making firefighting efforts extremely challenging.
By late evening, the wildfire had burned through 800 hectares, according to the prefecture. Although emergency crews managed to contain parts of the fire at different times, officials confirmed that it had not yet been brought under control. “The fire is contained at times, but it is not under control,” a source in the prefecture told AFP at around 11:00 pm (2100 GMT).
Firefighters faced major challenges while responding to the wildfire because of the hilly landscape, which limited access to several affected areas. To strengthen the response, water-dropping aircraft were deployed to help contain the flames from the air.
Weather conditions continued to worsen the situation. Temperatures of around 30°C, combined with powerful wind gusts, allowed the fire to spread quickly through low and extremely dry vegetation.
Authorities said around 200 people were either evacuated or instructed to remain indoors in the communes of Pouzols-Minervois and Mailhac as the wildfire approached populated areas.

One of the evacuees, Danielle, 99, from Pouzols, described the dangerous conditions caused by the dense smoke. “The smoke was so thick, so suffocating that firefighters told us to leave,” Danielle said.
The wildfire comes just days after a deadly heatwave affected much of Europe, with another period of extreme heat forecast. It also occurred one year after major wildfires struck the Corbieres region, highlighting the continued wildfire risk in southern France during hot and dry weather.
Local firefighters also responded to two smaller wildfires that broke out in Rognac and Lancon-Provence, near Marseille, as emergency services remained on high alert across the region.
