Gambhir Backs Indian Team After Tough Loss in Test Series

Gambhir Backs Indian Team After Tough Loss in Test Series

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Gautam Gambhir’s coaching approach has come under strong criticism after India suffered a major setback in their recent Test series against South Africa. India’s batting lineup struggled heavily throughout the two-match contest, scoring 201 runs or less in every innings. This poor performance helped South Africa achieve their first Test series win on Indian soil since the year 2000.

The margin of defeat also created an unwanted record for India. The loss became India’s heaviest-ever Test defeat by runs, breaking their previous record of a 342-run defeat against Australia in 2004. These results sparked conversations about the state of India’s Test team and whether Gambhir’s methods are suitable for this phase of Indian cricket.

Speaking to reporters, Gambhir highlighted that India’s current batting group is still in the early stages of their Test careers. He mentioned that four or five batters in the top order have played fewer than 15 Test matches. According to him, this lack of experience is one of the main reasons behind the team’s struggles. He explained that young players need time to learn and grow, especially in Test cricket, which is known for being difficult and demanding, particularly against strong teams like South Africa.

Gambhir said the players are learning directly on the field and that this process of development cannot be rushed. “They’re learning on the job… Test cricket is never easy when you are playing against a top-quality side. You’ve got to give them time. This is exactly what transition looks like,” he said, reminding critics that changes in a Test team often require patience.

When asked if he is the right person to coach India’s Test team, Gambhir responded calmly. He said the decision rests with the Indian cricket board, not him. He added that Indian cricket is more important than any individual, including himself. Gambhir also reminded everyone that he is the same coach who guided India to strong recent achievements.

Under his leadership, India drew a Test series against England in June–July. Earlier, India also won the 50-over Champions Trophy in March. Later in the year, they lifted the T20 Asia Cup title in September. He used these results to show that the team has performed well across formats during his tenure.

Gambhir also pointed out that India’s love for white-ball cricket should not overshadow the importance of Test cricket. He said that players and selectors must avoid ignoring red-ball performances just because someone scores well in limited-overs cricket. According to him, Test cricket in India will succeed only if everyone contributes and treats it with equal importance.

India will now shift their focus to limited-overs matches. They are set to play South Africa in three One-Day Internationals starting on November 30. After that, they will take on the same opponents in five Twenty20 matches beginning on December 9. These games will help India prepare for the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place next year on home soil.

Despite the recent defeat, Gambhir believes that with time, learning, and continued support, the young Test team will improve and become stronger. He insisted that temporary failures should not lead to panic but should be seen as part of the growth process.
