India declared their first innings at a commanding 518-5 against the West Indies on day two of the second Test at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Skipper Shubman Gill struck an unbeaten 129, his 10th Test century, to lead the hosts’ charge. India resumed the day on 318-2, with overnight batter Yashasvi Jaiswal soon dismissed for 175, but Gill carried the team forward with classy strokeplay.
Jaiswal’s Overnight Effort Ends Early
Yashasvi Jaiswal added only two runs to his overnight score before being run out following a mix-up with Gill. The incident occurred early in the day, leaving fans stunned as they had hoped for a double century from the left-handed batter. Despite the disappointment, Jaiswal’s innings had laid a strong foundation for India’s commanding total.
Gill’s Century Dominates the Day
Starting the day on 20, Gill took control of the West Indies attack, striking 16 fours and two sixes during his innings. He reached his fifth hundred of the year with a three-run off left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, raising his bat to acknowledge the enthusiastic crowd. His calm and confident approach helped India maintain momentum even after Jaiswal’s dismissal.
Partnerships Strengthen India’s Position
Gill shared a crucial 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket with wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel, who contributed 44 runs. Their stand featured quick scoring and frequent boundaries, particularly after lunch. Later, Gill also added 91 runs with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who survived a dropped catch off Jomel Warrican. These partnerships cemented India’s dominant position in the match.
West Indies Fightback and Final Declaration
West Indies skipper Roston Chase ended Jurel’s innings by bowling him with a low delivery, after which Gill decided to declare the innings. Spinner Jomel Warrican eventually dismissed Nitish Kumar Reddy for 43, celebrating with a fist pump. India’s decision to declare puts them in a strong position to pursue a series sweep following their innings victory in the first Test.
India Set Up for Series Sweep
By declaring at 518-5, India showcased their batting depth and resilience. Gill’s stellar performance and the contributions from Jaiswal, Jurel, and Reddy highlight the team’s balance and ability to build partnerships. With this commanding first innings, India is well-positioned to dominate the second Test and secure a series sweep against the West Indies.
