Google and Epic Games have agreed to a U.S. court settlement that resolves their long-running antitrust clash over how Android apps are distributed and paid for. The dispute began with Epic’s 2020 lawsuit accusing Google of monopolizing app distribution and in-app purchasing on Android devices.
Under the proposed deal, Google would implement notable changes to the Play Store aimed at lowering costs and broadening choices for both developers and users. The plan includes permitting users to install certified third-party app stores more easily. It also allows developers to steer customers toward alternative payment systems inside apps and through external web links, with a capped service fee of either 9% or 20% on those transactions.
The litigation featured several high-profile episodes, such as Epic’s victory at a 2023 jury trial and a broad injunction issued last year by U.S. District Judge James Donato. Google contended some of the court-ordered changes risked undermining user security and its competitive position; subsequent appeals and a Supreme Court decision that declined to pause parts of the injunction kept the case under scrutiny.
Analysts say the settlement could alter the Android landscape by giving developers greater flexibility while preserving safeguards for users. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney praised the agreement as affirming Android’s openness. Google, which denies any unlawful conduct, described the settlement as a pragmatic way to move forward.
The terms must still win formal approval from Judge Donato at an upcoming hearing.
